Negative PCR but positive LFTs

DH has symptoms, he has had 3 positive LFTs

Went for a PCR at 10:30 this morning and just had his results now (I've never known them to be so quick) and he's negative.

He's a carer for his dad who is very poorly, so he needs to be sure that he doesn't have covid.

Has anyone had a negative test followed by a positive test?

I'd get a second pcr I think

No but I've had three positive LFT followed by a negative PCR - mine were all the new style nasal ones only and from the same batch. Ones from a different box tested me negative. There are quite a few of us, I found a couple other threads on it actually!

That's interesting! He's got lots of symptoms. A similar thing happened to my sister and she took another PCR two days later and tested positive.

He's going to avoid his dad and take another PCR

I'd take a PCR again in a couple of days, but the false positive rate on LFTs are pretty high

I don't think that is true, false negative rates are high. PCRs are more accurate but from what a lot of people have said on here, they need to be taken at the right time, not necessarily immediately after infection.

He's had another positive lft from a different pack so we're sure that it's not a bad batch of tests

Same thing happened to me, turned out to be another non covid virus that made the LFT turn positive. Three PCRs came back negative and I did an antibody test a few weeks later (at the request of the Zoe study) which came back negative. The LFTs stopped showing negative around the time my symptoms started to improve. I kept myself isolated though as I wouldn't want to put another family through the worry and hardship of having to take time off work for a positive LFT while waiting for a pcr.

We seem to have the same situation here. 3 positive lfts for dh plus symptoms, 2 fainter positive ones for me no symptoms and now one positive for ds who has started coughing. Tests from 3 different boxes. We now have 6 negative pcrs as a family and are awaiting another set of pcrs back.

SquashedFlyBiscuits · 16/09/2021 17:50

Forgot to mention that I have 2 negative lfts mixed in with that too.
This has been ongoing since Tuesday.

Apparently the only Other virus they test for is the original SARS, but I don't think anyone has had that since like 2004

OP tell him to avoid his dad and act like he's got COVID. Because if he's doing those tests properly (no eating just before taking them etc) he almost certainly does.

Bennetgirl · 17/09/2021 08:43

Lots of dds school friends were sent home with positive lfts last week. Around half then had negative pcrs and are back in school.

I think the likelihood of a false lft is way higher then pcr. You could do one more pcr just to be sure x

SquashedFlyBiscuits · 18/09/2021 00:00

We all have symptoms now and are all testing positions on lfd. However, we have just received our 3rd set of negative pcrs. I don't know what we have but it doesn't seem to be covid.
