Informed consent

Just seen a picture of an acquaintance on Facebook getting his vaccine in a nightclub on a night out in London, how can that be informed consent?

Same with prize draws and voucher bribes for students, how can that be informed consent.

The nurse wasn’t keen to give me my vaccine because I said I didn’t want it but was feeling forced to have it because I can’t afford to isolate and want to travel, but someone drunk or bribed is okay?

I think we are missing what informed consent means. Consent means just that, you use your own free will to say yes to something. Informed means you you’ve looked at the info & understand it.

A bribe does not take away informed consent. It may persuade you to make a different decision but that decision is still informed & consenting. You’ve just decided that a free McDonalds is enough to get a vaccine. If a bribe is enough to make you do so, then you clearly didn’t have very strong feelings about it either way & probably would have eventually got it or didn’t really mind if you did.

Those strongly against a vaccine will not have done for a bribe of any kind ..

I think it is offered to clobbers arriving, not during the evening.

If it was Heaven they weren't even open on that day.

Agreed - a club in Birmingham was doing this. But I did think it was just being used as a venue. So the vaccination wasn't taking place at the same time as the nightclubbing. I doubt vaccinators would be working away in nighttime hours with needles whilst intoxicated people danced and staggered around nearby.

@Comefromaway

My dd is in London. She told me that Heaven (the famous gay/drag nightclub) became a vaccine centre but it's only between the hours of 12 noon and 9pm on a Sunday.
I was vaccinated in a cathedral, but I would rather have jabbed in Heaven Grin

I wish my DS (13) looked 18, maybe then he could get a vaccine in a nightclub! Gillick competence, and all that*

*I fucking love it when someone's name gets attached to the very thing they were vehemently opposed to.

Bob holl a bribe is a bribe.

The word you are looking for is coercion.

People are being coerced into it with manipulation, freebies etc. So, yes informed consent, but what about people who are made to by employers or family members.

annlee3817 · 16/08/2021 23:39

Weren't they doing them at latitude festival, a bus there as a pop up vaccine site? I'd hardly expect that everyone that wondered in was sober... Obviously no idea if non sober were turned away

Again, this seems to be confusing a lot of concepts together. You cannot argue that a free meal/entry into a raffle/a coffee is coercing someone into having the vaccine. If they were that strongly against it then a small incentive wouldn't change their mind.

Vaccination as a requirement for certain healthcare roles is different - yep it an ideal world this wouldn't be a requirement but it is not a new policy. Vaccines are required for certain healthcare roles globally, unfortunately it's something that goes along with the position. I was required to the 'flu vaccine before working in a neuro hospital, it didn't ever cross my mind to be annoyed about it.

Coercion by family is again not something that should be happening, but is not limited to vaccination (both getting it and not having it), and I wonder if you feel similarly about people being pressured into other medical interventions by family members?
