No sense of smell negative test

naughty40me · 03/08/2021 14:10

Just that really.

Started feeling rubbish Friday night, sore throat, stuffy head, not bunged up but feeling flushed and slept for hours and hours.

Bee very fatigued and Sunday afternoon lost all my sense if smell.

Can't smell anything, coffee etc.
It's not a blocked nose as I can breathe fine.

But test just came back as negative?

What are the chances it's a false result?
Luckily I don't work and then kids are off so I'm planning on staying home for another few days, I feel terrible.

Anyone else had this?

As an aside my sister was admitted and put on oxygen about 4 months ago, it took 3 tests yo show a positive on her despite Dr's seeing it was covid from her chest x-ray.

Very odd.

Apologies for spelling mistakes. Back to bed for me

No harm in taking another one. My sister had a negative PCR before it was positive 3 days later

x2boys · 03/08/2021 14:30

Yes i would do another, my son currently has covid, and mine and my dh LFT, S keep showing negative, but dh now has symptoms, i have ordered him a PCR so we shall see.

Daisy829 · 03/08/2021 14:34

I’d do another pcr. Several people I know took one with early symptoms that was negative then a couple of days later did another that was positive. Hope you are okay.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 03/08/2021 14:35

Do another test if you are worried, but if the first one was carried out correctly, the result will be the same. Covid is not the only thing that can affect sense of smell - other viruses can do so, as can anxiety.

QueenStromba · 03/08/2021 16:21

PCRs have a reasonably high false negative rate, I'd act as if you have it.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 03/08/2021 16:29

I would test again. My DBs FIL only tested positive after a week in hospital in October. He was treated for very typical 'COVID-lungs' including CPAP but didn't test positive until he was getting better. The medical staff commented several times on the rate of false negatives and the fact that they treated people with obvious COVID but no actual positive test.

naughty40me · 03/08/2021 16:41

Thanks everyone. I've ordered another test. I've told friends and neighbours to stay away, whatever it is I wouldn't want to pass it on.

Maybe I'm just run down, sore throat is usually my weakness anyway but have never lost sense of smell before.

x2boys I hope your son recovers soon.

That's pretty much what happened with my sister, they put her in "suspected covid" section of the ward. She had it confirmed by xray before a PCR picked it up.

Why bother with another test? Just act as though you have it

daphnedoo12 · 03/08/2021 18:56

@Hollyhead it's important to know if you actually have it or not. Doing another test isn't gonna cause any harm, plus track and trace can contact any relevant contacts if OP does indeed test positive.

Darbs76 · 03/08/2021 18:59

I said last week when waiting on my results I’d have another test if negative but it wasn’t in the end. But they aren’t 100%. My lateral flows were positive too

WorldsBestBoss · 03/08/2021 21:13

Exact same thing happened to me. I didn't test again - just stayed in. I didn't feel up to being out and about anyway.

FloFlower · 03/08/2021 21:27

I had similar. I lost my taste and had a negative test.

LilacGlasses · 04/08/2021 09:28

Same here. Had a cold and lost sense of smell and taste. Negative pcr and do regular lateral flow tests, all negative as well.
3 weeks later and still nothing.

eatsleepdream · 04/08/2021 12:10

I would test again, my first PCR came back negative

Starjammer · 04/08/2021 12:13

I had the same. I wish I'd got another test now, but assumed it was just a bad cold as had a negative PCR. However my sense of taste and smell is still not back to normal 8 weeks later, and I've never ever had that with a cold before, so I'm inclined to think it probably was Covid. It's actually very frustrating as I had a great sense of smell. I'm hoping it will continue to improve.

LilacGlasses · 04/08/2021 12:28

They won’t let me test again (I tried) as it’s too long since symptoms started. Lateral flows continue to be negative.

LilacGlasses · 04/08/2021 12:33

Starjammer I’ve had much worse colds in the past and I’ve never lost smell like this. There must be a strange cold strain going round currently.
I’m just starting to be able to smell some things if I put them right next to my nose so hopefully things will improve.

naughty40me · 04/08/2021 12:40

Second test has arrived today but I'm going to do it tomorrow so it will be a 3 day gap.

Done a LFT and it's negative.

Starting to think its just a different virus but just seems so strange to loose my sense of smell.

I've had a slight fever and upset tummy. No cough just very tired.
Chronic Migraine sufferer anyway so no change there.

I’ll be interested to know what the results are naughty40me. Please update when you get them.

TatoAndBeans · 04/08/2021 13:19

To be fair, I’ve lost my sense of taste and smell due to a bad cold pre-covid. Came back quite quickly (a few weeks IIRC) though.

Hi there

Just to update, second test is also negative.

I still can't smell though!

Very glad it isn't covid but bought a pulse oximter yesterday after reading up.
I've just got a horrible feeling we are all going to catch it eventually, soon as kids go back I'm September I expect.
It was rife around here before they broke up. Best to be prepared I guess.

My levels are 93-95 which I think is on the low side but probably "normal" for me. I'm not going to worry.

Interestingly I'm sure I read something about the double jabbed carrying a lower viral load and hence not getting as sick....which is great news...but does this mean that a PCR is more likely to show negative in a mildly ill double jabbed person.

Could explain a lot.

Also probably just normal summer colds doing the rounds.
