Nhs England/Wales 2nd jab issue

yoursfroobly · 21/07/2021 22:38

So I don't know if I'm being daft and I can't find anything explicitly explaining this

I had my first jab at the end of May in Wales, I'm registered to a GP in Wales and I have my small vaccination card they gave me.
Now it's time for my second jab but I've moved away, officially homeless as we are staying in an Airbnb while waiting for DH new work contract to come about (that's a whole other thread, but no cause for concern really). The new contract will be in England BUT we don't know where so can't register with a new Gp or anything like that yet.

Does anyone know if I can go to a walk in centre in England to get my second jab? I've heard that the systems aren't linked up so not sure it'll register that it's my second jab. Wales don't do the Covid passport on the app like nhs England

As long as it’s been 8 Weeks since your last jab, you should just be able to walk in with your card. I think....

titchy · 21/07/2021 22:43

Yes you can just turn up to a walk-in centre (make sure it's offering the right jab and its 8 weeks since the first one).

It's awkward to get any sort of vaccine passport though (I posted about this yesterday) - the joy of devolution.

Do you work in Wales OP? Lots of drop in clinics in Cardiff for those who live or work in Wales.

yoursfroobly · 21/07/2021 22:46

I did work in Wales but we've moved away now. Unfortunately we don't know where we will be based from September so haven't registered with a go in England yet
I got my first jab in Cardiff, Jabs R Us at the Bay Grin

Yes you can. I have vaccinated two people who had their first in Wales. The system knew they had had one already. Just go to a walk in clinic & it would be helpful if you had your NHS number with you. Take your card as well.

Perfect thank you, am going to try tomorrow Grin

I wondered about this. Im sure you can go to an English walk-in centre and get one but then you won't have a complete Welsh vaccine record or a complete English one -and this would concern me if vaccine passports become more of a thing.

Cookerhood · 21/07/2021 23:37

It's on the NHS app - I presume you can get this in Wales? There's certainly no problem getting the jab.

Yes that was my concern too

I believe the app with the vaccination certificate is only available on the nhs England app. Not sure what Wales is doing tbf

Wales do walk in ones, surely if you show proof of old address and your card they'll do it?

I assume your still registered with the original GP?

But she's not in Wales any more, that's the point!

I know that one of DS's friends (at university in Wales, back home in England for summer vacation) had first jab in Wales and second jab at a walk in in England. However, as the systems don't appear to be joined up at present, I think you could face issues if you wish to travel abroad somewhere where you need to show proof of being fully vaccinated (eg France). If you're still registered with a GP in Wales, might be worth getting your second jab there too if possible.

TheSkatesOfCoachBombay · 22/07/2021 00:13

Your vaccination is registered to your NHS number, don't panic. Find a walk in offering the same jab, take your card and your NHS number. You'll be fine ☺️

A family member had this issue. He actually couldn't get them to acknowledge it was his 2nd jab, they happily gave it to him though! Just also tried to book him in for another.

He had been invited through his GP in Wales for 1st and then had to register with a GP in England (although only here temporarily) to book 2nd. I don't think they were doing walk ins at the time so that might make life easier.

CardiffMom · 22/07/2021 06:28

My DD is english but is a student in Cardiff and has this issue. Her second jab is due over the summer and the NHSWales booking helpline told her that while it was possible to get jab no.2 at home in England (walk in center) , from a medical records point of view it would be easier and better to have it done in Wales if possible.
All this talk of vaccine passports has confirmed this for us (not that Wales is saying the same, but if England go there, I think Wales will too). She's going to go back for the day or overnight and get it next month.

Jessicabrassica · 22/07/2021 06:55

I've not yet managed to get my English GP to recognize that I was vaccinated in Wales (where I work). NHS England keep inviting me to have the jab! It is possible, apparently.

yoursfroobly · 22/07/2021 09:19

Quick update: I managed to finally get through to the vaccination line in Cardiff where I explained the situation.

They confirmed it's a 'bit of a nightmare' if you have one done in Wales then the other England from a proof of vaccination point. The guy on the phone was great so I've arranged a day where I will travel back to have it done Smile
