Beta-No quarantine for travellers from La Reunion!

Could not make it up!
Travellers from France have to quarantine because of Beta variant which is not present on mainland France but in La Reunion, 6000 miles away in Indian Ocean..

BUT travellers from La Reunion where Beta variant is present do not have to quarantine when entering the UK!!

Travellers from France have to quarantine because of Beta variant which is not present on mainland France

The Beta variant accounts for 8.7 per cent of cases in metropolitan France according to this article;

inews.co.uk/news/world/amber-plus-list-france-travel-rules-covid-beta-variant-figures-reunion-island-1111765

BUT travellers from La Reunion where Beta variant is present do not have to quarantine when entering the UK!!

I think they would if they transit via Paris - which is likely to be the case?

Also, have scientists in France stepped up their genomic sequencing since last year?

December 2020
Public Health Wales sequenced about 4,000 genomes in the past week, more than the whole of France since the beginning of the pandemic.

What is the relevance of all this cut and paste?
Article is old and out of context!

Very worrying as it is far more impact on the efficacy on the vaccine. Absolutely shocking.

Clavinova · 21/07/2021 20:36

Lico

My first link was dated yesterday.

You posted that the Beta variant was not present in mainland France - my link suggests up to 10% in metropolitan areas.

La Reunion doesn't have direct flights to the UK - if travellers transit via France they would have to quarantine. The article also states;

Given the limited travel from these islands, there is only a trickle of people moving to the mainland (France) all of whom are fully vaccinated.

If scientists in France are carrying out limited genomic sequencing compared to the UK that doesn't inspire much confidence in their data.

Walkaround · 21/07/2021 21:11

@Clavinova - are you suggesting that the UK knows more about the proportion of Beta variant cases in France than France does?!

Lico · 21/07/2021 21:52

Walkabout: yes, Clav. is suggesting UK knows far more about France than France does 😄😄 - with all the irrelevant cut and paste 🤣

Anyway, true figures: 3.4% in France -mainland Europe.

The France amber plus regime has no defensible logic behind it; especially now they have confirmed Spain (with way more Beta cases) will not be made amber plus.

Ministers can either do the grown up thing - acknowledge it was an error and reverse the amber plus rating now - or they can cling to it, come up with some spurious rationale and hope some new issue comes along to distract us all from the cock up.

Let’s see.

The source doesn't distinguish between mainland France and La Reunion does it? Or am I missing something?

Clav. is suggesting UK knows far more about France than France does

We are obviously doing our best. Grin

The Joint Biosecurity Centre and the Department for Health are to “interrogate” data coming out of France, with rates of the Beta variant highest in Paris and the greater Île-de-France region.

The FT article is behind a paywall for me.

Lico · 22/07/2021 09:55

Clav. That’s is the point of the argument!!😂😂

France includes its overseas territories in its national statistics !!!😄

BUT all Départements are broken down in

Dom Tom (Départements d’Outre Mer): Mayotte , Reunion (Indian Ocean)
Martinique, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, New Caledonia, , Tahiti etc..

So next time , if you read that France has 90% Brazilian variant , check French Guiana😄

Shame about the FT article ..

What do you mean by the royal ‘WE’, a hint of racism? us and them type of argument?

Haha that’s hilarious! The govt is so insanely inept. Indefensible. Beta is around 20% in Spain and no quarantine from there.

Lico · 22/07/2021 11:43

Persephone : could be because Spain is the best third country fully vaccinated? I have no idea!

Spain is behind UK and Canada - 53.63% of total population is now fully vaccinated at 20 July.

Apologies: third best

Read wrong line:😎

Spain : 52.83% of Total Population is fully vaccinated

Oh maybe. Wow it’ll overtake us soon.

Has the GISAID table been updated since last night?

Could you explain why France is now showing 76 cases of the Beta variant in the last 4 weeks (updated to 3.3%) and Reunion (which is listed separately - perhaps I missed it last night??) only shows 3 cases of the Beta variant in the last 4 weeks? I thought most of the recent cases were in Reunion?

What do you mean by the royal ‘WE’, a hint of racism? us and them type of argument?

What a ridiculous comment.
