2nd AZ jab mouth ulcers

doublejabbed · 21/07/2021 06:34

I don't know if this is a coincidence or not but since having my 2nd AZ jab last week I have now got a mouth full of ulcers - mainly on my tongue and they are so painful. I think I have 3/4 at the back of my tongue.

Anyone else have this as a side effect.

Didn't have AZ so can't comment on that but something else to consider apart from side effects. Have you got young kids or been in contact with young children? Could it be hand foot and mouth? I've had that previously and ended up with a mouth full of ulcers and a general burning/tingly feeling all over my mouth, very unpleasant 😢

bert3400 · 21/07/2021 06:44

I had mouth ulcers last week, but I've had the Pziser. I had about 5/6 and they were really painful and I thought it was odd, but didn't make the correlation with vaccine, which I had about 2 weeks prior to the ulcers.

I don't have young children I have teenagers but I didn't think of hand, foot and mouth 🤔 I started with them yesterday but they are definitely bigger and more painful this morning. When I woke up I could hardly move my tongue.

I'm wondering if it is the jab. However, I didn't get this after my first dose of AZ

I had the AZ jab & just had the usual symptoms - sore arm for a few days & a slight fever. I've had severe recurring mouth ulcers in the past though so I definitely sympathise. Oraldene mouthwash is helpful but I'd try topical gels etc first, the oraldene will likely alter your sense of taste for about 24 hours after every use. It's not disgusting, more a weird chemical taste. It's quite effective though, if you've got a mouth full of them.

It's been years since I've had an ulcer so I don't know what gels are best these days. Ulcers on the tongue are especially difficult because the gel doesn't stay put.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/07/2021 09:02

Funnily enough yes I did, didn't connect the two but haven't had them since a teen.

burnoutbabe · 21/07/2021 09:05

I had my 2nd az around 2 months ago and have had ulcers (usually just one) fairly regularly since then.

Hard to know if any of it is connected. Could also be hot weather and getting a dry mouth when sitting on tubes with a mask?

Realitea · 21/07/2021 09:13

Yes! I had that too and don’t usually get mouth ulcers

That's a good point about the dehydration. I was probably chronically dehydrated right through childhood until my mid 20s. Sometimes I had a single small drink of juice or milk, or a cup of tea, per day. Awful ulcers started in my early teens & lasted until my mid 20s. The frequent bouts of cystitis (about 5-8 a year!) started at puberty & stopped around the same time. I started drinking much more in my mid 20s. Mostly decaffeinated tea. These days I always have a drink next to me or in my bag if I'm out. No more ulcers or cystitis.
doublejabbed · 21/07/2021 10:03

I don't think I've been dehydrated I usually always have a glass of water on the go. I had my jab last Thursday and after it I felt rough, lethargic and weak. Feel ok now apart from these damn ulcers!

I have bonjela kicking around somewhere so I'll use that.

My grandmother told us to use hot salty water as a mouthwash. It works.

burnoutbabe · 21/07/2021 10:16

yes i am using bonjella for it to ease the pain.

With 36m of us having the same injections recently, pretty much any symptom we can think of is going to be felt by others. Stubbed toes. Headaches. too much farting.

HSHorror · 21/07/2021 10:21

I had 1 not sure when but after a few weeks after jab.
Right at the back like on jaw/bits to move mouth.
So painful radiating right down my
jaw affecting all my teeth almost had to go to dentist.
Could you be anaemic?

HSHorror · 21/07/2021 10:24

Just looked iron b12 or folic acid anaemia can cause mouth ulcers.
And vaccinations can affect iron levels as you make antibodies

Yes, so it's a good idea to get some B complex vitamins to boost your levels as vaccination will reduce them (they're needed by the immune system).
doublejabbed · 21/07/2021 12:19

I'll take some extra vitamins. I never thought of that. I don't think I am anaemic but I do have blood tests booked in the next few weeks to check over a few things.

Realitea · 21/07/2021 12:44

OP, I said earlier I got ulcers too and I have just found my iron levels are very low. I think there could well be a link there.

I'll ask if they are checking for that when I go for my bloods. Wonder if it is connected?!

Obviously more an issue for women (also eat less meat) and bf and prefnancy etc

Realitea · 21/07/2021 17:36

It’s really handy you have blood tests coming up anyway. It’ll be interesting to see what they find
