Positive LFT chances of a negative PCR?

DS has bad hay fever / cold symptoms typical for when he's suffering with bad hay fever

Took a LFT initially thought was negative but then realised there was a very faint mark on it

We did PCR this morning so waiting for results but has anyone had a negative PCR with similar ?

I think it's unlikely, tbh. It does happen, but it's rare.

This happened to my OH, a faint positive. PCR was negative 👍🏻

One of my staff has just sent me her LFT result
It’s a very faint positive
Hope the PCR comes back negative
Fingers crossed op

I’m in just this situation. PCR this morning - we will see.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 18/07/2021 18:23

I know people who've had it both ways, there's no way to predict what the result will be by comparing with other people

It's frustrating but you can only wait and see

I had that too, but my son is positive and I don’t feel great. Very faint positive but you can see the line. I had a fever last night too. My chest feels so congested. Waiting on PCR

Few of the year 9 students at my sons school had positive rapid lateral flows ehen doing the routine tests and went on to have negative PCR tests do it is possible but if they have symptoms I would think it less likely

MythicalBiologicalFennel · 18/07/2021 18:28

Happened to someone I know

Faint positive LTF
Negative PCR a couple of hours after
Positive PCR four days later

StepladderToHeaven · 18/07/2021 18:32

I've known it happen to a couple of people. It's the less likely outcome though.

Me. I had a fairly strong positive LFT. Felt awful. Headache, cold, no appetite. Had a PCR which I thought was a formality as I convinced myself I had it. Also made my whole family have a pcr as was so sure - partly due to positive LFT and partly because I felt rubbish and we were all negative!!! I was stunned.

PuppyMonkey · 18/07/2021 19:07

Surely the whole reason we’re asked to confirm it with a PCR is that the lateral flow tests aren’t accurate enough, so one assumes a positive LF might be wrong?

pommedeterre · 18/07/2021 19:11

Happened at local school to us for several kids. Interesting and amusing article in Sunday times today - a man took some positive lateral flows, did three pcr that were negative but then did an 'official' lateral flow that was positive and started his countdown then about 7 tests in!
