Why so many pinged by app if most people have deleted or ignore?

I thought most people had deleted the app and or ignore the self isolation if they get pinged after reading many threads on here ( I don't agree with ignoring self isolation btw) so cant understand why so many staff shortages now after being pinged when less people have the app and much less likely to comply than before?
Yes I know cases are higher but they were higher in October too so why now is there talk of shutting shops and factories and the underground etc as staff shortages?
Could the cases be much much higher than what is being officially released?

Well with 26 Million downloads, done people still have it, and delta is almost exponential in growth so yeah, ping-a-rama!

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/07/2021 16:22

"Most" people haven't - It's a bit of a trend here, but that doesn't seem widespread overall.

Enough people do have it, and will comply with it generally - Anecdotally, from people I know and various forums etc, I'd say that compliance is dropping in that people isolate for 7 days rather than 10; or go out once or twice to drive-thrus or parks, rather than ignoring the alert all together...

And I know of a few people who have been pretty happy to have 10 days off work - two teachers and a few office staff. There's no reason that wouldn't affect various industries, especially in the gorgeous weather, and especially for people who feel hard done by that people had a year "off" and they didn't.

It's a bit like the mask argument... You'd guess from certain threads/people/news sites that most people weren't wearing them, but there's a lot of support for them too. Or Brexit. Or anything else that we vote on; and people predict incorrectly because one side seems to be the most popular opinion in their group, and we forget that that doesn't necessarily mean that it'll be the most popular opinion overall. A lot of people are stuck in their own echo chambers.

Much more is open such as pubs, large events are going ahead, people are gathering in much greater numbers and large numbers of people haven’t turned off the app which basically equals chaos.

I have always had to turn the app off at work, basically I don’t turn it on now at all. I’m NHS and although no one is indispensable, I can’t do my job from home and it would cause staffing chaos if I had to isolate as we have so few nurses and I work a lot of hours.

Somarefuser · 18/07/2021 16:25

I don’t get paid if I don’t work, but I know a number of people delighted to be off work.
Especially now the weather’s looking good.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 18/07/2021 16:42

When people say they are being "pinged" do they mean by the app or official track and trace?

I do not have the app but I would isolate if contacted by T&T.

PaulaPetunia · 18/07/2021 16:43

The people I know self isolating are doing so because family members have tested positive.
This is all feeding into work absence. Pingdemic is a catchy phrase though!

CherryPlumCrow · 18/07/2021 16:44

The nice weather I'm guessing.

Ifitquacks · 18/07/2021 16:48

‘Most’ people haven’t deleted it, you could read 1000 comments on here of people saying they’ve deleted or ignoring but wouldn’t be close to ‘most’ of the 20 million people who have downloaded it.

JustMeAndWheatley · 18/07/2021 16:49

All the people I know who are isolating - and there are lots - are doing so because they’ve been contacted by track and trace or by schools and places of work or a member of their household has tested positive. Friends who do have the app never got pinged or contacted even though they should have been.

littlepeas · 18/07/2021 16:49

I suppose that if you’re pinged within the context of your workplace everyone will know if you ignore it. Much easier to quietly ignore it if it is only you who is pinged. I don’t have the app and will do everything in my power to avoid isolating, but would if symptomatic/positive myself or if I had been in definite contact with someone who was positive.

littlepeas · 18/07/2021 16:50

We’re currently in Cornwall and a couple of places have closed while we’ve been down here - I don’t know for certain, but I imagine this is because of too many staff having to isolate. I really feel for businesses at the moment.

sashagabadon · 18/07/2021 16:58

It reminds me a bit of March 2020 when everyone with a slight cough fancied a couple of weeks off work. This time they don’t even need to pretend to have a cough.

Whenthedealgoesdown · 18/07/2021 17:43

A lot of people get paid if they isolate and the weathers nice, why would they want to delete the app

Picklesthecat · 18/07/2021 17:45

Agreed that most people haven’t deleted it contrary to what you read here. I still have the app and have never been pinged, despite actually being a close contact of someone with covid.

KylieKoKo · 18/07/2021 21:39

I think some people will be not working but not isolating either.

kowari · 18/07/2021 21:45

I still have it because it's school holidays, lovely weather, and I'll be paid if I have to isolate. I've gone out to work through every lockdown, except for the two weeks I had Covid in lockdown one.

kowari · 18/07/2021 21:51

It reminds me a bit of March 2020 when everyone with a slight cough fancied a couple of weeks off work. In my case it was lucky that I was desperate for time off. I only felt a bit fatigued and feverish when I called in sick, but it turned out to actually be Covid (knew from loss of sense of taste and smell for two weeks, then a positive antibody test six months later). If I'd been happy at work I'd have gone in and spread it!

alexdgr8 · 18/07/2021 21:54

because the infection is spreading widely, moreso every week.
have you seen the figures.

AppleKatie · 18/07/2021 21:57

That’s a really flippant way to describe what I remember as a scary, stressful and upsetting time.

The people I know isolating currently are doing it because they feel it’s the right thing to do but are gutted to be missing important family/work/school occasions and bricking it about getting symptoms and it therefore running on and spoiling holiday plans.

I don’t know anyone doing this for fun. Confused

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 18/07/2021 22:06

Being ‘pinged’ seems to be being used for both the app and T&T from what I can tell.

There were over 300,000 new positive cases last week. I don’t know what the average number of close contacts is, but even if it’s low that’s going to translate into quite a lot of new people isolating.

anguauberwaldironfoundersson · 18/07/2021 22:11

We were away last weekend with a group of people who all had and used the app, checking into places, etc. We spent the day together at an event but kept away from others outside our social group.

Several days later one single person from the group has been told to isolate via the app, backdated to the day we were all together at the event. Not one other person has been told to isolate. There was no way they could have come into contact without someone else also coming into contact.

greenlynx · 18/07/2021 22:11

I think a lot of people are notified to isolate by Test and trace through work, school or family members they are just using the word “pinged” because atm it’s a trendy word in a certain way.
It’s like word “partner” often used by both married and unmarried couples.

Really? I've never heard anyone say pinged when they mean actually contacted by T and T. Quite the opposite, all I hear is complaints that T and T are useless and never contact anyone.
fertilitybs · 18/07/2021 22:21

I've noticed a trend that self employed people have deleted it (myself included) and employed people seem to be dying to get a ping.

At least in my circles anyway!

TotorosCatBus · 18/07/2021 23:03

Have they? I'd be interested in how many people have deleted the app.

Personally I never installed it but would isolate if contacted by T&T.
