Ready to cry over holiday and changing lists

Honestly I'm at my wits end with country traffic lights

I need to book a holiday abroad although I very much don't want to

My husband works abroad normally month away month home since covid he been having to do 3 months away 3 weeks home that's been taking its toll on our two young boys (5/7)

Now the country he is in has made a rule he can't be in UK 14 days prior to returning which means he can only get home for 4 days so unless I take kids abroad with him for 2 weeks he will only see them 4 days in 6 months

We literally were away to book Majorca today but they changed it yesterday and although I'm fully vaccinated I'm terrified of being abroad and the country we in goes to red and being stuck in a hotel in UK for 10 days with two kids on return - won't affect my husband as he will be flying off to work

I honestly don't know what to do, now I'm think Madeira or Croatia but again I'm panicking incase they change

Actually feel like crying and just want to be going to the cottage we had booked only 1.5 hours from our house, this was meant to be our holiday till the UK got red listed by the country he works

It's all such a mess and my kids are crying constantly for their dad Sad

Regardless of the holiday situation, your DH needs to be looking for a new job!

rookiemere · 15/07/2021 15:28

Croatia is lovely btw. Went to Dubrovnik for a long weekend and always wanted to go back

Caspianberg · 15/07/2021 15:36

I would actually look for a non beach location as that’s where mor tourists will head this summer. Could you go to southern Germany? Flights to Munich are regular from most parts of the world, and healthcare great if anyone has to quarantine or get treated. From Germany worse case if flight bans happen you can also have train or hire car driving back as options.

I wouldn’t go to an island, your then effectively trapped if flights or border restrictions happen

ifonly4 · 15/07/2021 15:40

Is there any way around the 14 day rule, ie regular PCR tests, quarantining? My colleague's husband works all over the world, most of his time at home is spent isolating until he's had a negative PCR test, but he's constantly testing and work pay for it all. Work also pay for quarantining in a hotel.

EmbarrassingMama · 15/07/2021 15:45

@MoiraNotRuby ah, I didn't see that.

Go to Ireland as you will always be able to get back out

HappyDaysToCome · 15/07/2021 16:12

Go to Ireland as you will always be able to get back out
Are Ireland letting U.K. in without quarantining this year? (They didn’t last summer).
Kalvinette · 15/07/2021 16:15

@HappyDaysToCome
"Travel from Ireland to the rest of the EU is being opened on 19 July in line with bloc policy. The transport minister, Eamon Ryan, has indicated this will also include travel from Great Britain.'

Burma Myanmar is totally banning anyone who has been in the UK
Everyone hates us !
They are in a very tricky situation Angry

Watapalava · 15/07/2021 17:44

uk have to isolate 14 days in ireland as we are not EU

cherin · 15/07/2021 18:26

Croatians are testing very little and therefore having microscopic numbers, I don’t think they have the same risks of Spain to change colours, but I’d stick to the region of Istria which has always been very low numbers and better than the islands. They have in place plans in case of tourist infections, the places are marvellous, and kids under 12 don’t need any test upon entry

cherin · 15/07/2021 18:28

If you need any tips or recommendations, I’m married to a local and happy to answer any question, or at least try

What sort of humanitarian work does your husband do in Myanmar? He must need a break, but ultimately the world isn’t anywhere near vaccinated enough. So I guess you’ll just have to wait a little longer. It sucks, as he deserves to see his family.

Indoctro · 15/07/2021 21:34

@Thisisworsethananticpated

It’s horrific Can he change work ? I’m assuming he is either oil and gas , military or aid work

It cannot be he can’t see his family ever
It’s inhumane

Yes oil and gas , I don't know what else he could do all he has ever done has been a trawler man then a driller. Neither really has transferable skills to the beach and the area we are living has been mega hit hard it's job losses , oil prices then covid. Rota is so long due to cost and quarantine. To be fair his employer is having a nightmare with world wide restrictions

They have been promised if they do 7 weeks on the rig they should get home for 3 week hopefully soon. As they will still need to do 4 weeks quarantines , 2 in country as they travel to a country then have to get private flights but the first country makes them quarantine too even though only passing through Sad

I didn't know that about a tour operator flying you home before country colours change that's a bit reassuring at least

I think I will look at Croatia it seems a good option at the moment

I appreciate people replying and offering advice thanks

I definitely feel a bit less upset

OP it’s hard
I work around your sector and a lot of clients with these skills are transferring to renewables (still offshore !)
There are also a lot of projects HUGE in Qatar
Get him looking around a bit
It’s been a hard year for kids that can’t see their parents , and I never thought I’d say this but my
Boys needed to see their dad

I know everyone’s had it rough but your family situation is tough , and won’t be this way forever Flowers

Indoctro · 16/07/2021 00:27

@Thisisworsethananticpated that's what my husband says

How long can this go on .? Surely some kind of normality will return soon as more of the world becomes vaccinated

He has already decided if and when he gets paid off this time he isn't returning to offshore he will retire from it and find a local job hopefully , but right now he feels it's stupid to walk away from money with such uncertainty lying ahead.

I guess we should be grateful he has a job with so many struggling with no work and income

It's just his job causes other struggles , mental struggles for all of us

Just need to get on with it though I guess.
