My friends daughter has been abroad with 5 friends celebrating end of college and 18th birthdays. They had their tests today to get back in the country. One has tested positive everyone else negative. On their negative certificate it states they are close contacts. Does this mean they have to isolate and not fly home tomorrow? Positive case has been transferred to a quarantine hotel. I think it means they have to stay put but friend thinks as they have a negative they can fly home. Feeling awful for the positive friend and lots of why did they go in first place.

I think it will depend on the rules of the specific country and the airline. Chances are they'll have to self isolate in situ but you/they should check. Do they have insurance that will cover staying longer? Some policies do.
