Smoking in a shop.

I was in a greengrocer's shop and the salesperson was not wearing a mask and had been smoking an electronic cigarette and was having a coughing fit. People shouldn't be smoking if they're handling foodstuff and serving customers. This will spread the virus. What can be done?

@TheVampiresWife you’re right, I didn’t think this through did I Sad Perhaps if we all breathe into paper bags whilst in private?

ForeverFloating · 12/07/2021 18:56

Vaping is not smoking, even doctors don’t put you down as a smoker if you vape.
There is no more vapour coming out than someone’s actual breath and tbh people can vape in their own business if they like.

@jane2100

I didn't complain. I don't want to fall out. But they might be spreading the virus.
And they might not be spreading the virus.

There are always other places to shop including online.

But why not man up and just speak to the shop keeper

TeamRick · 12/07/2021 19:05

It's only going to spread Coronavirus if the shop worker actually has Coronavirus never mind anything else!
Hopefully they are testing twice a week and will stay home if they have any symptoms therefore whether he's caping or not is of little consequence!

PattyPan · 12/07/2021 19:10

I wouldn’t link them to COVID but I had no idea it wasn’t banned to vape indoors! It should be, no one wants to breathe in your bubblegum scented cloud 🤮

gamerchick · 12/07/2021 19:15

Get a grip OP.

quizqueen · 12/07/2021 19:31

I'm with you, OP, smoking or vaping is disgusting and I would refuse to be served in a shop where it was happening and just walk out. If grown adults feel they need to have something in their mouths, perhaps they should consider a dummy

Anyone might be spreading the virus though Yabu

They were simply following government advice. Exercising personal responsibility.

Tupla · 12/07/2021 21:52

I think you have a couple of good points, OP.

  • vaping means actively inhaling and exhaling, so may theoretically raise the risk in the same way that talking, shouting and singing do.
-vaping means you can't wear a mask.

What to do about it, I don't know.

Tealightsandd · 13/07/2021 00:20

Well on the plus side if they're vaping nicotine, it has anti inflammatory effects.

Tealightsandd · 13/07/2021 00:21

And then you step outside of the shop onto a busy street. Full of traffic. Breathing in all those car fumes...

Thehenbunringsock · 13/07/2021 00:37

Don't you inhale and exhale the same amount when you vape as you do when you breathe? Isn't it just that you can see the results of the exhalation because it emits vapour?

Midnightballerina · 13/07/2021 00:51

I think you have 2 choices

  1. Speak to the owner/manager of the business
  2. Shop elsewhere

A lot of people vape to overcome a nicotine addiction. I would not expect you to understand if that is something you have not experienced.
