More U turns

They are u turns aren’t they?

I can’t work out what’s going on anymore. I thought the last press conference or whatever it was was final - about the opening. But it seems not ...

Definitely follow whatever you think the rules might be territory now.

Good. But I wish he had the balls to make them mandatory

More U turns
HalfShrunkMoreToGo · 11/07/2021 12:40

@gardeninggirl68 my post was in response to earlier posters saying they would find it hard to remember where they were or weren't supposed to wear masks if it was changed from law to guidance. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

I've been out to a retail park this morning and it was probably 50/50 on mask wearing today, I really can't see that improving with the governments plan for messaging, but absolutely no one can realistically give the excuse that they aren't wearing one because they can't remember when or where they are supposed to wear them. If people haven't remembered the rules in the last year they're not going to no matter what the official stance is.

SoMuchForSummerLove · 11/07/2021 12:50

The variant thing I find most disturbing. Everyone knows that when you have cases running rife, variants emerge, and sooner or later there will be vaccine escape, then we'll be literally back to square one.

What a gamble with thousands of human lives for the sake of, what, a good news headline that lasts one day?

It borders on manslaughter.

gardeninggirl68 · 11/07/2021 12:54

Have heard all the excuses. All of them

We have someone stood at our doors with sanitiser, spray etc requesting mask wearing

The public are vile to us

Since the football started and since we entered July we have found it to be dropping off. People aren't bothered now

Agree, prob 50/50 mask wearing

Indeed it does.
luckylavender · 11/07/2021 13:11

@gardeninggirl68 - just as easy to carry on wearing them surely?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 11/07/2021 13:34

Tbf to Boris, I don’t think this is a u turn. This is basically what he said in the press conference. It was the media and people on social media who translated it as masks are going.

The government don’t want to have to legislate it, but it relies on people doing the right thing and wearing them anyway if possible. Unfortunately, that sort of thing needs a really, really clear public health campaign and messaging and there’s no way we’re getting that.

MarshaBradyo · 11/07/2021 13:38

So the last press conference said no government diktat (were his words) but you should probably wear them

Is that what was heard?

The media got excited but we will be expected to wear them not it’s not law

I was on the fence but finding this is irritating - feels more controlling in a way.

That’s the problem, I don’t think it was heard. I’d be more worried about Whitty’s phrasing though. Sounded very much to me like the open up now plan has two parts with the open up and have infections high during the summer being part 1 and and autumn/winter lockdown to then bring cases and hospitalisations right down as normal winter infections rise. It’s definitely not an irreversible 1 way roadmap in his head.

I don’t know how far Boris and Javid are on board with that though, so we could be in huge trouble this winter when the lockdown doesn’t materialise early enough.

It seems to be going for a herd thinning policy.
roguetomato · 11/07/2021 13:57

I think it's wise choice if they did. If we don't we are going to see chaos, unnecessary life will be lost.

MarshaBradyo · 11/07/2021 13:57

Rafal I thought Chris Whitty said that winter would be hard but the public would not accept a lockdown for flu / non Covid, so with that in mind do Covid now

I found this reassuring as I agree

I had previously wondered that... the cynical part of my wondered if it was a way of managing our top heavy population at the beginning.

newnortherner111 · 11/07/2021 14:12

@SoMuchForSummerLove @IndigoC

I think that Mr Johnson should face criminal charges, as at the very least he is the employer of those in the public sector who have not had reasonable levels of protection. Given the way in which the cabinet is run, I believe that corporate manslaughter charges against him should be brought.

I'd wish Keir Starmer who has a legal knowledge far greater than mine would advocate this.

SonnetForSpring · 11/07/2021 14:16

Why are people talking about what boris et al said... it all depends on what is happening now. Which to me, was bloody predictable but whatever.

BlackeyedSusan · 11/07/2021 14:17

"You won't have to wear a mask after the 19th"

"You can choose to wear a mask inside"

"Use personal responsibility"

"You are expected to wear a mask indoors"

Do you think they will change to you must still wear masks by the 19th?

Yes definitely

Legally?

No as they’d need to vote

Hasn't the line always been the public won't accept another LD until they do?

Covid will be around in winter, the Brazilian's showed that a public that has had CV wont catch it again, is simply wrong.

We need, more than ever, to take a cautious approach now.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 11/07/2021 14:40

All this crap about washing hands...

The comms from government needs to be 'this is airborne, you breath it in, anyone (even if double vaccinated or asymptomatic) might have it, act accordingly'.

THAT would be proper personal responsibility.

MarshaBradyo · 11/07/2021 14:41

Hasn't the line always been the public won't accept another LD until they do?

We’ll see but for now I’m glad Whitty has said we’re doing this now and less like to accept it later.

What is the vaccine uptake in Brazil?

HappyWinter · 11/07/2021 20:03

Not sure what the vaccine uptake is like in Brazil. Pre-vaccines, they had a big problem after their first wave. They had 67% covid antibodies as many people had caught it, but they had no restrictions and a much bigger second wave due to a new variant. I'm not sure that would happen here as we do have vaccines, we are risking a new variant if we let it spread too much, but it pays to be a little cautious such as keeping masks etc.
