On it being a joke or not, I honestly can't tell either way! He is a medic in a specialty that have a reputation for being a tad arrogant and from his photos clearly spends a lot of time in the gym. So maybe deadly serious?

He’s clearly clever, conscientious and works on his body: what’s wrong with acknowledging that and paying you a compliment in the subtext that when you’re out on a date together you’re going to be a smoking hot match??
