What do you plan to do after July 19th if you have a vulnerable child?

I have no idea what we should do now!
We shielded from March 2020 to April 2021 as an entire family unit, DC didn't go to school either until April 21.
It felt there was some sense of normality with cases low, our children had been able to return to school and we were able to take them to outdoor venues and meet other children outdoors.
It now feels like with the removal of all restrictions and the way cases are currently rising that the risk is now going to be higher than it ever has been in the pandemic. No bubbles or isolations within schools and also the change so that under 18's don't have to isolate at all?
So now essentially it isn't safe to take our children anywhere as we have a CEV child who isn't vaccinated. Advice from the government is for CEV (vaccinated adults) to take greater precautions.
How do you plan to take greater precautions without going back to completely shielding again?

I'm in a similar position, and I'm guessing we will be isolating until vaccines are approved for under 16s. I don't know what else to do, and the selfishness displayed on this forum alone is depressing. Social distancing and masks should really stay while case numbers are so high.

Tickly · 05/07/2021 21:05

I just wanted to say that whilst I don't have a CEV child I disagree with what the govt is doing. I will be remaining cautious and wearing masks because I understand that it helps protect others who cannot be vaccinated or who can't build antibodies. I'm sorry you're being put in this position by our incompetent, reckless government.

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 05/07/2021 21:06

I pulled mine out of school last week, and it looks like we'll be stuck shielding again until vaccines are (hopefully) approved.

I could cry, honestly. So many posts about no longer wearing masks, and the rising case numbers are just a nightmare.

I don't see another option.

jumpbounce · 05/07/2021 21:07

I do agree with some of the selfishness on here but then again sometimes i think we can't really blame them for wanting to get back to normal and really the Government should have been addressing this issue and keeping the protections of social distancing and mask wearing in place when they haven't yet vaccinated any of the vulnerable children! I don't care they want to remove it in hospitality or large capacity venues, we can avoid those with children and adults can make their own decisions whether to go or not, but to remove it everywhere means we literally have to avoid everywhere!
These children have already missed out on so much more than any other children and it is just set to get worse from here on in with no indication of when the under 16s or under 12s will get vaccinated.

I’m so sorry OP. It’s a very unfair world. For my child I would do whatever it takes to keep them safe. I don’t think it will be that long until vulnerable children are offered vaccination.

If the country was full of people like yourself we wouldn't be so apprehensive today. I'm sure many people will be thankful for you continuing despite the governments decisions.

My son's best friend is back to shielding, what choice do they have.

Yes let everyone else get on with life would be fine if we could vaccinate our kids. Having no vaccine and no other precautions in place leaves us completely stuck. I don't understand why the go ahead hasn't been given for the 12 -16 age group for Pfizer. It's has been in several other countries e.g the USA and Canada for a while now
Whichjab · 05/07/2021 21:15

Made worse (if over 12) that other countries are allowing vaccination. I'm not surprised, I bet you aren't either, further proof of the contempt the protected millionaire people in charge hold for us.

mag2305 · 05/07/2021 21:38

I don't have a vulnerable child but I just wanted to say that I do understand. There are groups of people that are going to be even more vulnerable with cases rising but restrictions relaxing. If people aren't in a vulnerable group or know someone that is, I think it's easy to be very blasé about the whole thing. I'm currently 9 months pregnant and have been super careful for the whole pregnancy. You really see things so differently when you have greater risk factors.

mrshoho · 05/07/2021 21:44

I'm really sorry for all in this position. There's no words as to how callous this government is. Announcing all that tonight with no mention of protecting CEV and vulnerable children.

bellamountain · 05/07/2021 21:48

Just to say my heart goes out to parents of vulnerable children. Whilst normality has to return, it really really does, children have been at the bottom of the pile the whole way through. Now the middle aged men are all protected, it's fine to carry on! Either children are still sacrificing their education, hobbies, rights of passage, memories or if they are vulnerable, their parents are stuck with even more uncertainty.

We aren't a child friendly country.

Also notice how different this thread is from the anti mask, anti vaccine threads. They have multiple pages. This thread has only a few replies. Because most just don't give a shit do they. So thank you to the few people that have replied and so kindly.

NotMyCat · 05/07/2021 21:54

I get it totally (am CEV), will still be trying to keep my distance and wearing a mask

Techno56 · 05/07/2021 21:54

My child.isnt vulnerable but I know lots who are and I really hope that the JVCI hurry up and decide that benefit outweighs risk for CEV children being vaccinated. I truly think they will, but when!

NotMyCat · 05/07/2021 21:55

If anyone wants a Cambridge mask they're now 70% off by the way
https://cambridgemask.com/collections/all
I got one extra just as a back up

PeonyTime · 05/07/2021 21:56

I think you, and other families like yours, have been completely forgotten about.
I dont know what you can do. It sounds like everything that could protect the vunerable is going to be removed, because the decision makers are double vaccinated, therefore no longer vunerable.
Covid has absolutely ripped through our school the last 2 weeks. I think we have had more positives in June than during the rest of the pandemic.
They are also looking at London, and thinking "I'm all right Jack" where as other parts of England are really suffering.
Hopefully herd immunity won't take long, and without sacrificing too many to allow the vunerable to get out and about again.

nether · 05/07/2021 21:57

Same boat as you OP

Life has just become narrower again and indefinitely

I thought the same.
Whyarewehardofthinking · 05/07/2021 22:03

I am devastated for some of my students and those with a CEV sibling. We have struggled so much since March 2020 but so many students have been aware and tried to protect their vulnerable peers. Now that is it. Our cases are still over 400 per 100k and whilst we don't have loads dropping dead people are ill. It is spreading and there are children who will suffer serious, real life consequences if they catch this.

VaccineSticker · 05/07/2021 22:03

I will keep mine on for the sake of everyone around me.
I’m so sorry for all these children and all the lives that will be lost and long covid sufferers because of this “freedom day”.
They have taken the freedom from the clinically vulnerable children.

Swirlingasong · 05/07/2021 22:07

Same as we are doing now. Only go to deserted places (we are lucky to live relatively rurally), stay home, not really see anyone, continue to worry both about the health issues and about the education/mental health/developmental issues that worry everyone else. And cry on a regular basis.

CatherineMorland · 05/07/2021 22:07

I will still be wearing my mask and distancing post 19 July. The rates are rising, it seems unbelievably reckless to do away with all restrictions at this point in time.

I know. Not to mention so many still not vaccinated or awaiting second doses. Feels very wrong.
