What’s the point of ‘red list’ countries?

It looks like the UK is enroute to becoming a ‘red list’ country if it isn’t already. We’re now accepting that cases are spiralling out of control here, and more so once restrictions list. So why will fully vaccinated people still need to quarantine if arriving from red list countries, but fully vaccinated people who have been exposed in the UK wont?

I don’t understand what we’re trying to keep out tbh...

We're trying to keep out different variants. Not all covid is the same.

The point is, the UK becomes a "red" list for other countries to stop people from there going to the UK. It's other countries not wanting to end up in the same situation as the UK.
