LFT - lemon juice and fruit shoot

51 replies

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 13:56

Anyone else seen the posts regarding school children putting lemon juice and fruit shoots on LFT's?

A few posts and videos circulating of secondary aged children putting juice on LFT'S which comes back as a positive test so the whole year group can isolate.

How is it possible for this to happen?

@stairway that's crazy.

@Lollyds thank you for that information.

THere's more information at fullfact.org/online/kiwi-covid/ but, in essence, it's the acid striping away the surface of the test kit revealing the line underneath. It couldn't happen if you were using the test as designed, as the solution is a buffer, so neutralises any acid in your saliva.

Motorina · 02/07/2021 16:38

Sorry - @Lollyds - you replied faster and better!

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 16:39

@Motorina Thank you for that, makes sense once it's explained to me lol.

@Motorina Makes sense 👍

Sorry OP, I didn't mean "you" personally, I meant any parent who's dc did it.

Eccle80 · 02/07/2021 17:39

@roguetomato

If your dc did this and get to SI, you can't really blame the gov or school for disruption to dc's education. Though I read that only PCR positive is counted as covid positive, it doesn't skew the number of positive cases. It only affects the school and people involved. Though I think it's a bit silly thing to do, unless you have some bad intentions, no one wants false positive on the test hugely disrupt people's lives.
I don’t think this is correct, they include LFT positives in the results, but then remove later LFTs that go on to have a negative PCR. Unconfirmed LFTs stay

Not huge numbers, but you can see the split for england here

I did wonder if something like this was going on. When i was at school in the 1980s i certainly would have done this. (i was being badly bullied) and loads of others i grew up with would have done this too.

bonbonours · 02/07/2021 17:52

What I don't really understand is why kids would do this. Yes they get to stay off school but when they do that they still get assigned all the work to do with none of the fun of hanging out with friends. Plus they don't get to do all their extra curricular activities, go to their friends house, potentially miss fun school trips/prom/disco/events etc etc. My teens would be gutted if they had to isolate, not pleased.

x2boys · 02/07/2021 18:03

Yes I can confirm that black current fruit shoot gives a positive result🤣

stairway · 02/07/2021 18:04

The problem is teens don’t also make sensible decisions bonbonours.

WrongKindOfFace · 02/07/2021 18:17

We also had a go this evening. Lemon juice wouldn’t work. Our best results were from coke or apple juice mixed with some of the liquid they give you.

JustMeG · 02/07/2021 18:19

It's ok @roguetomato

@MercyBooth I had no interest in science, I'm sorry now lol

@bonbonours I don't understand either, there's no fun in being isolated.

@x2boys 😂😂

Sometimes the fun is in fucking with the system, I think.
JustMeG · 02/07/2021 18:23

@WrongKindOfFace that's interesting, would make sense having a stronger result with the liquid as pp said it acts as a buffer.

I think the children who would do this kind of silly stuff doesn't think much about the consequence. They think it's clever, only to find out they put themselves along with many others in unnecessary misery.
MercyBooth · 02/07/2021 19:04

Maybe some of the kids who are being bullied are doing this. What about their misery.

Ponoka7 · 02/07/2021 19:11

From what I understand it started with people being sceptical about the tests and testing them, using different liquids. It became known so teens started doing it. It was happening here, across Liverpool. Schools are no longer sending whole year groups home to isolate. They say get a PCR and come back in.
Not all parents make their children isolate, so it's time off in the sun.

MouldyPotato · 03/07/2021 07:34

Should expel anyone who does this.

Whiskyinajar · 03/07/2021 08:40

Enterprising little buggers Grin

My DS has discovered that if he develops a cough on a Monday morning it means the whole of the middle of the week off while we await the results of a PCR test. Hmm

Two weeks running his magic cough emerged after 9am Monday morning and had disappeared by 2pm once he was home and it was established he couldn't go back without a negative be PCR test. To be fair to the college it's a Special School Sixth Form and some students can be vulnerable clinically. Thankfully they are now wise to DS....and so are we.

bendmeoverbackwards · 03/07/2021 09:40

Please don’t waste any more tests doing these ridiculous trials. The plastic waste from LFTs is bad enough as it is.

You're working on the assumption that they'll all actually observe isolation rules. Obviously there's some stuff they won't be able to do, but it would be very naive to imagine that none of the 'isolating' teenagers are in fact hanging around with their mates. If you don't want to go to school and you have no intention of either staying in or doing the work, most of the downsides disappear.
HaveANiceFuckingDay · 09/07/2021 16:11

I just did lemon juice and perfume . Nothing .. didn’t work for me

Northernsoullover · 09/07/2021 16:14

What a waste. As if LFTs weren't wasteful enough
