Maybe black fungus is not something to worry but the papers want us to?

I haven't seen it. Currently patients appear much the same as with other varients

Ravenspeckingontheroof · 02/07/2021 06:01

It’s not a thing in the uk. I work in a field where I would have been notified if it was and we’ve heard nothing.

Patients with prolonged ICU admissions on immunosuppressants have always been susceptible to fungal infections (more frequently aspergillus or Candida, rather than mucormycosis that the article refers to). The management of severe covid includes immunosuppressive drugs such as dexamethasone and tociluzumab which whilst improving covid outcomes makes patients more susceptible to other serious infections. So covid ICU patients may well be on antifungal drugs too.

Thank you all- that’s reassuring to hear that it’s not as scary as the papers/media make it out to be…

@Ravenspeckingontheroof it’s the media digging one thing if the other to keep us on tenterhooks!

It was reported in India at the height of their infections. No one was particularly worried at that point and it's not been mentioned since, so hoping nothing to seriously worry about.

Namechanged4thi5 · 02/07/2021 10:53

@Tigerblue I don’t understand why Guardian thinks it warrants an article?
