I don’t understand this part of the test result message, am I being a bit dim?

Got a negative result but it says you will still need to self isolate if the test result is following a positive lateral flow (which it was) and you were advised to continue to self isolate.

Why would you be advised to continue to
Self isolate if you’d had a negative PCR after a positive lateral flow and who would be advising you? Test and trace? But don’t they only get in touch if you have a positive PCR?

Am I just reading it wrong?

Test and trace contacted us when dd tested positive on lateral flow test.
It was our local la tracing team that rang.
Once we had pcr test results back they called back to say unless dd had symptoms she could return to school.

You are being told to isolate .

TenInSport · 30/06/2021 22:44

I'm not sure who would be advising you, but currently a negative PCR only releases you from a positive lateral flow if it was taken within 48 hours of taking the lateral flow.

It also does not release you if you took what is known as an "assisted lateral flow" which means you took it at a testing centre under the guidance of (or in reality being watched by) a staff member there.

From NHS for when to keep isolating:

“you had a PCR test (a test that is sent to a lab) because you had a positive rapid lateral flow test, and there were more than 2 days between the tests (England only)”

So if you did your LFT and on the same day or day after you did your PCR you can stop isolating

Nothing makes sense anymore, people gathering in pubs, sports, restaurants etc. Yet barely any kids in schools or allowed out their houses. Totally sucks.. yes I'm annoyed at the whole situation. Don't know why they have told you to isolate following a negative pcr unless it was unconclusive . I'd query it .

conkersarebonkers · 30/06/2021 22:55

As others have said, if your negative PCR is more than two days after the positive LFT it won't release you from isolation so T&T would advise you to continue to isolate.

When DS had a positive LFT followed by a negative PCR, T&T contacted us to confirm we no longer needed to isolate, so you will probably get the same call.

Karwomannghia · 30/06/2021 22:58

It’s only if you have specifically been asked to self isolate regardless of pcr result. You haven’t so you don’t need to.

MRex · 30/06/2021 23:16

You only need to self isolate if you've been explicitly told to, or fail on one of those other rules.

Thank you!
