Just wondered if anyone had read this book? I listened to the BBC Sounds episode and heard Sarah describe how she is able to survive on 4 hours sleep a night - having had triplets…

I haven’t but I read extracts in the DM. It’s fascinating how they see themselves as ordinary women when they’ve achieved such extraordinary things.

Hornbill123456789 · 28/06/2021 17:36

@Sylvan92 yes! I also read those extracts. Particularly liked hearing about the discussion at a campsite!

The campsite anecdote was odd. Imagine having the brass neck to argue with one of the Oxford team about it!
I see Sarah Gilbert got a standing ovation at Wimbledon today- she didn’t look like she was enjoying it!

Hornbill123456789 · 28/06/2021 17:42

Yes, I think many great scientists and academics are humble, certainly not attention seekers! I haven’t seen that - I’ll take a look! Thanks!

@Sylvan92 that brought a tear to my eye - wonderful! Smile

Haven't read the book? Is it good? What's it about?

I've just started it so can't give a full review! But it is a memoir from the two professors who developed the AZ vaccine. Fantastic to hear from two female scientists at the forefront of it all.

For anyone interested, there's an online event at blackwells about the book :) www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/vaxxers-with-professor-sarah-gilbert-and-dr-catherine-green-tickets-156071083813

MistressoftheDarkSide · 28/06/2021 18:18

Thank you @leafyygreens Smile

Are there any reviews? Just been googling but it's all videos coming up.

Sounds like an excellent read.

Maybe it’s about the vast profit that’s been gained. CNN ran a story on the new billionaires of the pandemic.

nope not out for public distribution (yet!) so no reviews online as of yet

is officially released in July :)

Well, that didn’t take long, misery-guts.

eek, it's started already Grin

I doubt the two academics are the ones making millions from it

Sylvan92 · 28/06/2021 18:25

Astra Zeneca aren’t making a profit on the vaccination at the moment.

I'm very interested to know the nuts and bolts of the vaccine development from the horses mouth. And it's great that women were at the forefront, with all the freedom to research, discuss and put it all together.

yup she's now part of a biotech company, but this isn't profiting directly from the AZ coronavirus vaccine

good for her tbh, so many excellent scientists are still living paycheck to paycheck even in their 30s and 40s

SouthOfFrance · 28/06/2021 18:32

Looking forward to reading it when it comes out. Looks like it will be an interesting read.

I agree, why shouldn't scientists who develop things benefit financially?

JaninaDuszejko · 28/06/2021 18:42

The vaccines will save millions of lives, how can you possibly begrudge the people who have devoted their lives to developing life saving vaccines this windfall? They have done more for humanity than most other millionaires. Remind me, what has Messi done to deserve his vast fortune? Or Len Blavatnik, or the Queen or Jeffree Star?

Hornbill123456789 · 28/06/2021 19:44

@leafyygreens - thanks! I shall get my copy on order.

OP posts:
MistressoftheDarkSide · 28/06/2021 19:51

I think I'll order it too. Very difficult to discuss a book on its merit and contents otherwise lol!

Sylvan92 · 28/06/2021 21:58

I think from the extracts I’ve read that they have ambitions to expand their current operations in order to be able to do research on our wider scale with an eye to the possibility of another pandemic. They also want to increase the capacity of vaccine production. It’s good news for the U.K.
