Taking kids out of school before our holiday

There’s a couple of covid cases in my children’s school and one year group is now isolating. School finishes for the summer on Friday and we’re due to go on holiday (in the UK) the following Saturday. I’m considering withdrawing them from school in the middle of next week, meaning they miss the last couple of days, in case they are told to isolate and the isolation period overlaps with our holiday. Am I over reacting or would you do the same?

I’ve always been an advocate of kids being in school and it doesn’t feel right to take mine out, but they surely won’t miss much in the last three days.
Locally, lots of schools are closing multiple bubbles and cases are going through the roof. We’ve been lucky enough to avoid school bubble isolation so far, although both DSs have had Covid - it was in a school holiday so they didn’t miss school. I can’t help but feel like it’s all ramping up again and more bubbles will burst this week.
DH and I will chat later but I’m very much leaning towards keeping them off to save our holiday.

Do it. We did it at Christmas.

We did this at Christmas.

We done it took them out Tuesday last week for our holiday on Friday . The nearest school to ours had 4 whole year groups isolating, we have went from being an area with no local cases to it rising so was not taking a chance. The headmaster said we weren't the only ones to do this.

blameitonthecaffeine · 27/06/2021 18:56

Depends on what they're missing. Our past week is coming up and we have our main school musical production, summer concert, sports day, prom, bbq, picnic, leavers service and prizegiving. The children hate missing the last week and it's not fair on staff and other children affected by their absence.

If there was nothing happening, I guess it doesn't matter.

Watapalava · 27/06/2021 19:56

I would

Tho to be fair there are no checks with school isolations - not workplace isolations were the workplace is doing the role of track and trace

This for me, no one would actually be checking if I was told to isolate so I’d still go

I’m a teacher and I’d do it if I could! We’re due to move house the day after the last day of term, plus our new baby is due early August.

I have planned ‘proper’ lessons (Year 3) right up until the last two days of term though, so be aware that your DC may miss out on some learning/consolidation.

We break up next Friday and go away on Saturday. I was thinking of taking DD9 out but we're just completing 10 days isolation. I don't know if I can justify another week of missed school. And what are you telling the school? I'm so worried about having another 10 days and no holiday! Been WFH since March last year and need a change of scene. Can't stand this uncertainty.

Howshouldibehave · 28/06/2021 19:56

I would absolutely do this-and I’m a teacher. Kids will get loads out of a family holiday.

Loads of our parents did it at Christmas and I’m expecting it again in July.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 28/06/2021 20:03

If I'd booked something I couldn't cancel at short notice, I'd do it too OP.

Wherediditgo · 28/06/2021 20:03

Do it.

I feel so bad for you all in this situation!!

Wakeupin2022 · 28/06/2021 20:08

I hadn't even though about it until now!

Our school finishes mid week. Cases are not too and in our city at the moment but if it changes in next couple of weeks I may think about it as it would only be a couple of days!

Our holiday is basically seeing family so that is more essential to the kids at this time as they have missed them so much!

Pleasedontputthatthere · 28/06/2021 20:27

I would just isolate until the holiday and then test and go. Perhaps that’s just me though.

Well hopefully that's just you........Angry

Only way to ensure you don't have to isolate is not to go anywhere as a family for ten days.
