Sort of arthritis symptoms after vaccine?

anyon · 24/06/2021 06:40

I had the Pfizer vaccine almost 3 weeks ago. I was (and am) very happy to have done so, and am looking forward to the second one in August.

In the last week, for no discernible reason, my hands, wrists and ankles have become mildly sore and clicky, and my knees feel burningly hot all the time.

It's not the end of the world but it's making it harder to walk and exercise. I'm not a big fan of painkillers so am just hoping it goes away.

I was wondering though if this might be an inflammatory response to the vaccine and if so, will it vanish soon - did anyone else have this?

I had a full on reaction to the AZ vaccine

I couldn’t even sleep because my hands were throbbing so much

I had an X-ray three weeks
Later and they said I had a mild arthritis on my hands but the rheumatologist agreed that the vaccine was the trigger

Steroids sorted it out but overall it was three weeks of hell

I had no reaction to the second vaccine

Yes I've still got this, 12wks on, my second (AZ) vaccine is tomorrow. I'm dreading it. I perhaps should have spoken to the GP, but really hate phone consultations.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 24/06/2021 06:55

Yes, out of the blue I've now got an achey hip, it was very painful about 6 wks after my vaccine, now its a dull ache . Doctor says it's arthritis, I've been for an xray and blood tests
Ditto, I now have asthma for the first time in my life . I think it's very strange

I'm sorry to hear you've all been struggling too, how annoying for us all after something that we've looked forward to all year!

I think I was sort of hoping people would just tell me I was mad or that this would just disappear after a week.

Sounds like I need to call my GP.

My DP had Reactive Arthritis after AZ. 8 weeks off work and three lots of steroids to sort it out. Don't forget to do the yellow card report OP.

That sounds terrible. Will you be having another dose of AZ?
I know of a few people now who have reacted badly to this one.

My husband and I both had AZ but we’re relocating to Canada so have the option of having our second there, which will be Pfizer.

Vivihuun · 24/06/2021 07:06

@WeIcomeToGilead

Just realised you’ve said you had your 2nd 🤦🏻‍♀️

IAmTheLemonInPlay · 24/06/2021 07:06

I've had very painful foot and hip joints for the past week, and can barely walk when I first stand up.

I'd not even considered it could be related to the vaccine, but I had Pfizer two weeks ago.

Odisia · 24/06/2021 07:10

I had painful hands for about 3 weeks after my second Pfizer vaccine. They were also mildly swollen. Gradually went away and now fine.

anyon · 24/06/2021 07:21

Thanks Odisia, I hope I'm like you and it disappears!

Should I yellow-card it before I talk to the GP? It might be coincidental after all?

OP posts:
Daytimeknitter · 24/06/2021 07:27

Yes to the yellow card. It doesn't matter if it's coincidental, the yellow card system is to catch anything that might be an adverse reaction not just things that definitely are.

anyon · 24/06/2021 07:35

Okay thanks, I've done that now Smile

To anyone reading who's worrying over getting their vaccine though, I would take this anytime over the risk of Covid.

I have rheumatoid arthritis and the first dose of AZ caused a brutal week long flare. Was fine after the second.

anyon · 24/06/2021 08:16

I've had another thought based on a thread I just replied to - my weight has slipped a bit recently. I'm now a bit underweight, (although I don't think I look like I am) so maybe that's causing it somehow. So I'll make myself eat more too.

I was in agony after second astra, from the site of a previously broken wrist. Painkillers and hot water bottle helped and it went after 24 hours.

IWishTheBishopWell · 24/06/2021 09:21

I already had (psoriatic) arthritis but didn't notice any worsening after the Pfizer jab. I was already in a flare though.

I would be seeing your GP about your symptoms OP. Tell them you have weight loss combined with joint pains and hot joints - it could be rheumatoid arthritis so it needs checking out.

anyon · 24/06/2021 10:35

Thanks IWish, I've filled in a request to call me back on the NHS app (which seems to be the best way to get hold of GP at the moment). I've mentioned both issues.
