I have a son in Year 3 at Primary School. They are operating in year group bubbles but there are 2 classes in each year. This is the 4th time this year his year group 'bubble' has burst and we've really had enough now. 4th time this year of self-isolating for him. He plays for a football team but has had to miss so many training sessions and matches due to having to self-isolate. 4th time this year of not being able to socialise with any of his friends. 4th time this year I've had to take time off work. Each time it's been a child from the other class who's tested positive so chances are he's not even been anywhere near them anyway which is even more annoying. He's spent all afternoon crying. When does this end? It's ridiculous. I hate seeing him so upset and there's nothing I can do about it.

I think when someone has tested positive, all close contacts should receive ten lateral flow tests and have to test themselves every day. This cannot go on indefinitely

TheVampiresWife · 23/06/2021 10:07

@Zenithbear

It's ridiculous and very damaging to children. One of our dc is a teacher. Now having to isolate because one person in another class tested positive. Off for 10 days despite no symptoms and has to miss best friends wedding tomorrow where she was to be a bridesmaid. She's fuming. Ready to give up her job.
DD is starting teacher training this year. She lives at home and we're really concerned that we're going to end up constantly having to SI (we haven't needed to at all yet). We're desperately hoping things will change by the time her placements start.

They have been trialing this at my kids' school.

@poshme

Oh that's interesting. I reckon it's the way forward

poshme · 23/06/2021 10:17

@Comedycook if someone was positive, as long as the close contacts were negative the contacts were allowed to still come to school- with daily testing (combo of LFT & PCR)
They still had to SI at weekends, and couldn't go anywhere other than school.

Is that a private school?

Lemons1571 · 23/06/2021 10:27

@TheVampiresWife you wouldn’t have to isolate as a contact, only your DD. You’d be a contact of a contact so free to go on as normal, unless DD gets symptoms.

poshme · 23/06/2021 16:58

@Comedycook no- state school as part of PHE trial

They were also part of a trial that did mass testing months before they were rolled out nationally. (Though someone on here said I was lying as mass testing 'wasn't happening' in schools before Christmas)

TotorosCatBus · 23/06/2021 17:56

Our school is part of that trial but we are a control group following current guidelines

LemonCake79 · 23/06/2021 18:10

Our local high school was in the trial but the local authority withdrew them on the assumption it is the delta variant circulating in our area. The trial isn't supposed to include variants of concern but I have no idea how they know which variant it is at the point of a positive test.

Very unfair on those pupils as there are now two entire year groups isolating.

BlackeyedSusan · 23/06/2021 18:47

4th time since January or fourth since September?

One of mine has done more, (42 school days) one about the same since September. Yet others have been lucky and not done much.

It is a bit shit. Made worse by big bubbles but hard to keep them separate in some school buildings.

Orangesandlemons77 · 23/06/2021 19:53

@Comedycook

I think they should move to a system whereby instead of isolating, close contacts do a lateral flow test everyday instead
Some schools are already doing this, ours is, as part of a government trial to see how it works.

Possibly, after the Summer this may be the same for other schools.

What ours seems to be doing is offering parents the choice- to isolate or do daily tests. We only have a couple of cases so far so not sure how it is going but it is in place right now in school.

Orangesandlemons77 · 23/06/2021 19:54

Sorry just read this trial was already being discussed.

Duvetdweller · 23/06/2021 20:14

My year 10 is on their SEVENTH isolation since September. I take them for a PCR as soon as I get the call and if it’s negative they can meet friends. Can’t go to school but their education is screwed anyway.

Chillychangchoo · 23/06/2021 20:17

It’s a fucking shambles. It’s no wonder your son is fed up with it all. Poor boy, he can’t even play his football like normal due to repeated isolations.

It’s an utter disgrace.

Sad seven

70 days over two months meant to be isolating

Only children get this length of time and no one blinks and eye

Baileysforchristmas · 23/06/2021 20:20

@Duvetdweller that’s awful, I can’t believe how bad some areas have been.

Duvetdweller · 23/06/2021 20:20

@MarshaBradyo I don’t know who we’re doing it for anymore

Orangesandlemons77 · 23/06/2021 20:53

I have a friend in the Glasgow area where there are high cases and her DC have been out one after the other nearly the whole time Sad

Rowgtfc72 · 24/06/2021 08:32

Dds pcr test came back negative, just like the 3 lateral flow tests. It is a cold. Like we said. Just waiting for the school office to open to check she can go back.
I know there are doubts around the reliability of lateral flow tests but if school aren't happy with the results of 3 negative tests, what's the point of using them at home or at all?
Dd tried to log onto home learning yesterday. No lessons where live so no schoolwork was done.

Baileysforchristmas · 24/06/2021 08:43

It’s an absolute disgrace, this needs to change.

Wildswim · 24/06/2021 21:42

It's unforgivable to treat our children like this. Children are being punished. It has to stop.

Tealightsandd · 24/06/2021 21:50

Not sure punished is quite the right word, but definitely we need to do more for CEV and CV children. They need to be prioritised for vaccination as soon as is possible. Many shielded for around a year, unable to return to school or activities when other children did.

cantkeepawayforever · 24/06/2021 22:02

It is unforgiveable not to spend the money to put in place the measures that have been called for right since the start of the pandemic - proper mitigation in schools, and vaccination for everyone in schools as a priority.
