Oh GOD. Indie Sage is now launching a climate change group

Climate change is a very important issue, and we need to be getting everyone (across the political spectrum) involved in a way which is inclusive and non-judgmental. Big tent, please.

Which is why we do NOT need this hysterical, heavily partisan and judgmental bunch of twats involved. Please, please, Indie SAGE, will you PLEASE just stay away from climate change stuff? I can think of nothing more likely to turn environmental stuff into a partisan-political football and provoke a LOT of cynicism and resistance among a huge % of the population.

Sounds good to me. Hopefully as a pp said they will have a go at politicians who fly to places they could easily get the train to.

And then they can ban the sale of SUVs and get billions spent on cycling infrastructure.

People are too selfish to take climate change seriously (I think this is a scenario where the overused s word is actually relevant) so need to be forced.

IrmaFayLear · 21/06/2021 10:32

I think we all have our own ideas about climate change. It is very difficult not to be a hypocrite depending on what actually effects you.

I’m not sure I’d like independent sage’s views anymore than they would like mine.

Orf1abc · 21/06/2021 10:38

I think an expert body set up to tackle climate change is a good idea, but surely they should be experts in fields relating to climate change?

Read the article. It's not the same people.

DeltaBlues · 21/06/2021 10:42

heavily partisan as opposed to hand-picked by a right-wing government to deliver the advice the government want to hear (or else be ignored until such time as it suits to government to hear it)? Current SAGE is arguably more than a little partisan.

DeltaBlues · 21/06/2021 10:45

Current Climate change advice to government seems to be to make the individual little people do it while the government tries to get as many of us as possible to continue to fly on holiday and definitely to the USA (was in special relationship talks in Cornwall) and to trade as much as possible with countries on the other side of the world using fossil fuel transportation. But make the individual citizens change their cars and boilers.
I would suggest an alternative point of view would be very welcome.

FifeQuine · 21/06/2021 10:49

Great.

What we need is an unaccountable body made up of scientists few of us have heard of with little experience in the area, chaired by a nice chap who does TV documentaries .

I mean its not like 126 Nobel winning scientists have told us that we're in an emergency, or that many of the governments of the world have been trying to get something done about this for 30 years.

VaccineSticker · 21/06/2021 11:00

Fantastic news!

Ostara212 · 21/06/2021 11:09

@PracticingPerson

Speaking up for something you believe in is not an ego trip.

It is something people who have no aspirations often throw about, as though everyone should just sit in their house and spend their lives doing nothing.

Some people want to help change the world for the better. To do that, they have to speak up.

I'm sick of the small-minded mentality that attributes negative motives to everyone.

I don't know where this level of vitriol comes from. We disagree on something. You don't know me but from the chat, you assume this.

Would this be your conversation IRL?

I know, it's time to get off MN. I must practice what I preach. The internet is pretty poisonous.

This is exactly why this group worries me. Some people will be allowed to do certain things but others will not.
ollyollyoxenfree · 21/06/2021 11:13

zero carbon dioxide?

ragged · 21/06/2021 12:25

It will fizzle out & get ignored

LucilleTheVampireBat · 21/06/2021 12:30

@strangeshapedpotato

I suggest you stick to Sesame Street OP - it would seem the Climate Change discussion on there is more at your intellectual level.
I just know you're not as gobby in real life as you are when you're hiding behind your screen insulting people.
ATieLikeRichardGere · 21/06/2021 12:36

I’m obsessed with climate change personally but having Indy Sage involved is an unfortunate development. Has also given me a little laugh though and outside the hysterical chamber of Twitter I imagine their impact will be pretty limited.

MarshaBradyo · 21/06/2021 12:37

Oh I missed it was the independent version. I see

Will be more activist then as it is already compared with SAGE

Shame I thought it was the real one

TheKeatingFive · 21/06/2021 12:42

What’s the overlap with Independent Sage’s current membership?

Fluffyowl00 · 21/06/2021 12:44

I’m guessing Us4 Climate change will be soon to follow. Main agenda- everyone else’s children have to walk but ours can be as unsustainable as we like

NCwhatsmynameagain · 21/06/2021 12:44

Somebody trying to do something about the climate emergency is a good thing OP…

It's being set up by David KIng who set up the Covid one, but it isn't going to be the same scientists! I would have thought that was obvious. The Covid gorup are epidemiologists, former and present directors of Infectious Disease groups for WHO etc and the climate ones will be similarly, professionally qualified and experienced individuals, in fields relevant to climate.
