Sense of smell. Has yours come back?

I tested positive on Saturday, and like many other people have experienced, my sense of smell has gone. I’m worried that it’ll be gone forever!

Has anyone else experienced a loss of their sense of smell? And did it come back? If so how long did it take? My sense of taste has been unaffected so far (touch wood!).

Mine hasn’t returned yet, tested positive end of last month.

A year on, mostly - sometimes its disappears again

Worst thing was when my taste came back, I can no longer stand onions or garlic or the smell of them even

Bit of a problem for a keen foodie and a good cook

About two weeks, DH took longer (had covid in October and like you, taste was fine but smell totally went). I Freaked Out - but all okay eventually. Weirdly - body smells are different now, ie sweat and my little DC's farts smell the same 🤣

Chances are you'll be totally fine!

I had Covid and lost my sense of smell in January. Mine only went for a few days thankfully. I think after about 4 or 5 days it was mostly back.

It wasn't quite the same as before though. Some smells took longer to come back. Garlic was one and the cat litter tray was another (I didn't mind not smelling cat pee).

A few things are still slightly off. A lime and ginger soap I used to adore now just smells ok. My sinuses also still feel a bit sensitive.

I believe the vast majority of people get their smell and taste back even if it takes a little while. Hopefully you will soon too. I think it's a good sign that you can still taste. I could still taste too. Hopefully it means you haven't been too badly affected.
Get well soon.

Lost mine at Christmas. Couldn't taste my turkey - disaster!
I think I had a week or two of nothing at all then it gradually returned. It's still not right though. My deodorant (coconut) smells vile to me and I have one smell for "bad smell" and I need to work out what it is

ancientmammal · 16/06/2021 15:14

Mine is a bit better now but not what it was before. I had Covid at New Year.

FlagsFiend · 16/06/2021 15:59

I had covid in December, smell was gone completely for about a week and gradually sort of came back. Unfortunately it came back wrong, some things smell revolting that I used to like the smell of - lemons for example, so nearly all cleaning products smell vile. Other things I can't smell at all like gas which is a bit concerning. I also get phantom smells where I smell things that aren't there, such as burning. Some things have the right smell but very faint as if it's far off. My sense of taste isn't as bad but is still affected, it's pretty rubbish really.

HarrietOh · 16/06/2021 16:07

Mine gradually came back after about 5 days and I thought all was fine until a month later when my friends were smelling something and passed it to me, but I couldn't smell anything at all. So I think certain things were still a bit off.
I think it's all fine now though!

This is absolutely me! What I imagine would be BO and farts (!) smell the same, like a weird maybe sulphuric wet smell. Nothing like BO or farts used to smell like!

I also thought my coconut scrub stank the other day but everything else back to normal - I think.

Izzy24 · 16/06/2021 21:42

Lost my sense of smell for about a month then had two months with the constant smell of petrol fumes - it was awful. Now almost back to normal but I wear a different perfume each day to try to stimulate it .

redferrari · 16/06/2021 21:50

I haven't had my smell back. I was gradually getting some back but recently I had hay fever and everything smells weird. I think I have same smell for orange and banana it's like a chemical or plastic type smell so it's really affecting me :(. I had a dose of steroids as advised by a ENT specialist who said it may even be a year. It's only been 6 months now.

GentlemanJackie · 16/06/2021 21:54

Mine took 2 months to come back. At first I could only smell when the DC had failed to flush the toilet. A year later it’s more or less normal again
