Covid police

Am I alone in being fed up with the ‘Covid police?’
Admittedly I’m a bit tetchy at the moment - recent changes regarding restrictions lifting has not helped
I went into a charity shop today and person on door ‘insisted’ I use hand gel - I said no thanks and left (if I don’t use my own - prefer not to tbh it upsets my eczema or psoriasis)
Next stop was an antiques centre in an old church so fairly large building - I was greeted with a lecture about mask wearing and following the arrows round the building - I was the only person there! I offered to wear a mask if any other customers arrived and came within 2m of me but that wasn’t good enough! I was happy to follow the arrows but with claustrophobia and it being a hot day couldn’t cope with a mask for no real reason
Has logic really left the building???

@nordica

You weren't the only person there unless there was no staff. I guess you didn't care about protecting them though?
I was wondering that too re staff and protection.
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 16/06/2021 07:33

I just ignore the staff member on hand sanitiser duty in Sainsbury's. I don't even look in their direction and haven't been stopped yet.

You were definitely in the wrong about the mask though OP.

FflosFfantastig · 16/06/2021 07:33

Yes logic has left the building, along with tolerance and understanding. People are loving the power of enforcing the roolz

Justdowhatyouweretold · 16/06/2021 07:36

OP if you worked in a shop would you want people to do what they could to protect you?

Do they not matter?

Do you work?

LightasaBreeze · 16/06/2021 07:41

The sanitizer staff in shops just stand there and some people will then use the sanitizer as they will be worried that the assistant will say something, if they weren't standing by the sanitizer they would just be doing another non-job like handing out baskets and again some will take one. Just ignore them.

BogRollBOGOF · 16/06/2021 07:51

@GlomOfNit

Their shop, their rules, OP. Were you planning to suck back all your exhaled air as you left the antiques place? It doesn't matter if nobody else was in there at that point in time.

Bloody hell, a year and three months into this thing and seems like some people are still not getting it.

Yup, the average risk assessment is still not getting it and is filled with twaddle about surfaces and one way systems, and obstructions like reducing toilet provision so people spend longer indoors potentially breathing out virus through the relatively gigantic pores in their unregulated, ill-fitting masks that are about as useful in these kinds of setting as a child's security blanket.

Ventilate as much as possible. Be efficient, let people flow in and out as easily as possible.

Dear God people are still going on about this.

Stick to the rules. Their shop, their rules. If you're not happy, then go away.

PotassiumChloride · 16/06/2021 12:35

The mask thing wouldn’t bother me too much, I’d just put it on. Take your point about the hand gel, you shouldn’t have to explain why you don’t want to use it and, in reality, I expect it has virtually no actual impact on spread.

You’re right about toilets.

Bellyups · 16/06/2021 12:46

Yabu op. The world doesn’t revolve around you

JeanClaudeVanDammit · 16/06/2021 12:49

Apart from the mask one, it’s all pure hygiene theatre. It’s going to make shite all difference and just pisses people off. But businesses have had to sign up to this bollocks to be allowed to reopen. I agree some people seem to be absolutely revelling in it though.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 16/06/2021 12:51

Toilets yes

Everything else Biscuit

Because people are known to flow in and out easily in antique stores, aren't they, BogRollBOGOF? No, they cluster and linger in groups. The OP was simply lucky it was a slow when she visited. Also, you may not like or be unable to wear masks, but don't transfer those feelings onto other people - particularly those just doing their job (isn't the economy important to you?).

I genuinely don't understand what the issue about the mask is? There are staff in the shop, not just you, right? So why would you only put it on if another customer came in?

I do agree toilets should be open if possible - and round my way that's definitely happened. For instance, public toilets next to our local park open, toilets near the pier at our local beach, department store toilets in town and the toilets in M&S - all open.

luckylavender · 16/06/2021 13:22

Their shop their rules. Also if you prefer your own hand sanitizer take it with you. That's what I do.

1) handgel - if you use your own then carry your own and use it 2) getting spoken to by staff about masks & the direction of flow: This relates to their licence to open the shop and allow people in. The directions relate to how they presented their case to the council on how to reopen Asking you to wear a mask relates to the requirement that masks be worn. However you may be exempt, and can just tell them that you are exempt. They can therefore either refuse you entry (where reasonable such as offering to sell things to you at the door) or they can let you wander around without a mask. By asking they have fulfilled their legal obligation. If someone complains or the council wander in to inspect then if they ignored you the shop is liable to a fine, if they asked you then they aren’t
