Likelihood of schools closing again before summer...

I know noone knows what will happen. But I feel this is increasingly more likely every day... Fingers crossed we can hold out until the summer holidays!

No, I don't think schools will close before the summer holidays. Most schools will have a little bit more space too because, as I understand it, year 11 and year 13 students have now completed exams and most don't seem to be going back after half term. I'm no expert but I can't see the government will close schools.

jumpbounce · 04/06/2021 12:30

My opinion is that it is very highly unlikely to have closures of school on a national level but potentially plenty of disruption with bubble closures, self isolation and whole school closures for short periods of isolation in areas worse affected with the in and out that was seen before Christmas.

Useruseruserusee · 04/06/2021 12:30

I really don’t think that will happen.

Helenluvsrob · 04/06/2021 12:32

Nope. Can’t see it. They were the 1st thing to lift with lockdown and there would be an awful lot of clamping down to do before then even if anyone political was minded to do so.
It’s only 7 weeks isn’t it .

I’ve a feeling what ever the numbers no back peddling will happen though 21/6 will mean now no changes

Thiscantreallybehappening · 04/06/2021 12:32

I agree @jumpbounce , bubble closures, year groups being sent home maybe a school closing for a short period if there is a particularly bad outbreak but a national school closure is, in my opinion, highly unlikely.

PurpleDaisies · 04/06/2021 12:34

There might be individual closures because of outbreaks but I highly doubt there’ll be a mass closing of schools.

Mitigations like masks might come back.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/06/2021 12:35

Incredibly unlikely. I can't ever see a nationwide closing of schools again to be honest, everything else would be shut first if needs be, pubs and shops etc.

confuseddotcomma · 04/06/2021 12:35

Large number of teachers still not vaccinated though and I can imagine they will kick off now there is evidence delta variant spreading in schools.
All we can do is keep our fingers crossed....!
My husband and I both work in the NHS but our kids have been so upset by the key worker provision at our school, I understand it's only childcare but it's not childcare we would ever choose to use. It's so hard. If we are facing endless cycles of school closures I think I'd be better to quit work and look after them but no-one knows what is coming!

I don’t think there will be another national school closure in the summer term, though it wouldn’t surprise me if it happened again in the winter.

Beebityboo · 04/06/2021 12:40

Nearly a zero chance I'd expect. My DC's only have five weeks until summer when they go back and there would be absolute outrage is schools closed before things like pubs and indoor mixing were banned again.

PurpleDaisies · 04/06/2021 12:40

Teachers want kids in schools. Teachers want to be safe in the workplace. That means mitigations and testing, not schools shut again.

CarrieBlue · 04/06/2021 12:43

I will not ‘kick off’ like I’m a petulant teenager whose been asked to tidy up, but I will be supporting my union in any and all action it seems necessary to give me a workspace that is as covid secure as a supermarket at least. Did you mean to be so dismissive of valid concerns, backed by data, from professionals who have had to work for the last 16 months in unsafe conditions?

jupitermars1345 · 04/06/2021 12:46

Next to zero chance imo

MeanderingGently · 04/06/2021 12:47

Our school breaks up at the end of June anyway, no chance at all they will close before then.....

Wakemeuuuup · 04/06/2021 12:49

I don't think there'll be a national school closure but they will be lots of school and years closed. It was happening before half term and it will continue

HeronLanyon · 04/06/2021 12:50

Reading news about delta variant, figures and schools ive got to admit that was my first thought. Who knows other than that this gov will be extremely reluctant even if it is he right thing to do.

confuseddotcomma · 04/06/2021 12:51

I'm so frustrated by all this!
I know we all are...
I'm not trying to upset teachers but I'm so upset myself about what has happened to my kids and about having to keep working in unsafe conditions myself for such a long time. I'm jealous tbh! I wish my union would support me in not working when it was unsafe! You teachers are very lucky with that.
I wish there could be more support and good will from all sides. I wish my local school could do something different for the kids so they don't come home crying every day in key worker sessions. I wish I wasn't a nurse mostly!!!
I know there's no solution, it's just shit for us all

Everything else will close before schools.

dapsnotplimsolls · 04/06/2021 12:52

No way will they close again. Boris' backbenchers will flay him alive if he closes schools again.

PurpleDaisies · 04/06/2021 12:52

Who is saying closing the schools is the right thing to do? Even some of the most zero covid advocating scientists are pushing mitigation not closure.

MaMelon · 04/06/2021 12:53

One of the high schools here in Scotland has just gone back to online schooling for 2 weeks - they break up at the end of June and I suspect they'll stay closed till then. I just hope to goodness this doesn't extend to other schools.

Iloveitall · 04/06/2021 12:53

I doubt it but I think an autumn : winter closure may well happen again. I guess it depends on how the vaccinations work against this variant. If it works and more people are vaccinated by the autumn then hopefully there won’t be anything more. I’ve seen the headline that secondary pupils are going to be able to be vaccinated too so that will help in secondary schools.

confuseddotcomma · 04/06/2021 12:54

Last time I told myself I would rather quit than put my kids through that again but it's so hard to know what to do. Maybe this would be the last lockdown. Maybe it would be hard to find another job. Maybe the provision next time would be better. Maybe I can try to get temporary leave from work as the care is not acceptable standards. Who knows

Incredibly unlikely imo

We are at the phase of living with it now

What proportion of teachers are

HeronLanyon · 04/06/2021 12:54

Even if meant exactly that - ‘even if’.
