Gove alerted as close contact after Portugal trip but not isolating

The government really couldn't be doing things any worse. Gove went off to watch footie in Portugal has been identified as a close contacts but instead of isolating is doing daily lateral flow tests. Meanwhile Portugal is worrying enough to put on the amber list.

Instead of self isolating for 10 days, Mr Gove will take daily Covid tests as part of a pilot scheme designed to measure testing effectiveness.

Hahaha of course he is!

VikingVolva · 04/06/2021 11:49

Well, there are trials of LFTs for this kind of purpose.

Awfully convenient for him that he managed to access one.

lonelyplanet · 04/06/2021 11:50

Let's hope he doesn't bring a new variant in and finish off our leaders.

Quite. Presumably everyone else returning from Portugal will now do the same.

I'd be more worried if he has any particulary vulnerable staff coming in to contact with him.

Especially if only partially vaccinated or with a condition where it's possible the vaccines don't work terribly well

lonelyplanet · 04/06/2021 12:00

I think the most worrying thing is the message this sends to everyone and that he knows this and clearly doesn't care.

Fucks sake

noblegiraffe · 04/06/2021 12:01

That pilot scheme has been running for a while. They can't have had many takers if they need Gove to advertise it.

MaxNormal · 04/06/2021 12:01

That's awfully convenient for him.

ChristmasCovid · 04/06/2021 12:02

These daily testing trials are now offered to most contacts of positive cases.
As long they they meet a certain criteria and have not been asked to quarantine after travelling from an ‘amber’ or red’ country

Decorhate · 04/06/2021 12:08

They are not offering this test scheme to everyone - my Dd has had Covid, is fully vaccinated and is currently self isolating as she was a close contact with a positive case (who was also fully vaccinated btw). She was hoping her household would get chosen for the LFT trial but sadly not so she has had to miss her UK end of uni holiday.

DuncinToffee · 04/06/2021 12:12

Once again, one rule for us, one rule for them.

jumpbounce · 04/06/2021 12:16

Why does this not shock me.

ChristmasCovid · 04/06/2021 12:17

Yes they have to meet a certain criteria and are offering to ‘most’ contacts. From what I remember must be over 18, not in an area where voc are identified among others criteria’s.
The daily testing if you are in the study allows people to attend work and carry out other essential duties on the day you test negative. So unfortunately a holiday wouldn’t be covered anyway.

vera99 · 04/06/2021 12:18

And they rise ever higher in the polls PPE contracts and peerages all round.

Not offered to DS1, who has had to spend his whole half term in our house because a close contact tested positive, and despite his twice-weekly LFTs both being negative this week.

Sounds more like one rule for them, another rule for the rest of us.

sashagabadon · 04/06/2021 12:19

It’s a trial isn’t it? Plus he’s probably double vaccinated by now so it will be interesting to see if he does get symptoms or not.

jellybeansforbreakfast · 04/06/2021 12:19

Ooh. Re-emerging as Mr Teflon, yet again!

Not named by Cummings and now he conveniently gets added to a new trial for LFTs.

ChristmasCovid · 04/06/2021 12:24

From the gov.uk website

Who can take part
People who are traced as contacts can take part if they:

do not have COVID-19 symptoms
live in England
are not in full-time education
are aged 18 and over
are not under the quarantine rules for arriving in England
People will not be able to take part if they have been informed that they have been in contact with someone who has, or is suspected to have, tested positive with a variant of concern (VOC) or variant under investigation (VU

He got 'pinged' by the app for being in contact with a positve case so wouldn't that rule him out?

nordica · 04/06/2021 12:30

Why should he not have the same opportunity as others to take part in the pilot scheme? If anything he probably has fewer close contacts anyway due to his job as he can work from home or from a spacious office somewhere else, and won't be taking a bus to work anytime soon infecting lots of strangers...

BingBangBong1 · 04/06/2021 12:35

I thought this was the original plan anyway?

When DD went back to school, that was what was said originally. But then her mate in the year above got told just before half term to isolate for ten days (and was miffed as this is the second half term this has happened).

Surely, to get out of the annoyance of Lockdowns and isolating, if people can and agree to take a daily test for ten days it works better than forever having periods of isolation, especially for school aged kids?

I don't think it's right for Gove to be testing it no, but we can't be that shocked.
But as a trial overall then yes.

Depends whether the positive case is from an area where VOC have been identified I suppose. Not saying I agree with it btw - I don’t personally think the LFT tests are sensitive enough. I am just saying what the criteria is.
longwayoff · 04/06/2021 12:39

Get a grip OP. Mr Gove is special. Very special. Plebby arrangements do not apply.
