Why isn’t Vietnam on the red list?

Just watching BBC news and they keep going on about Portugal being removed from the green list. Why is everything on this channel about bloody summer holidays abroad?

Why aren’t the BBC and other news outlets reporting what’s happening in Vietnam? Vietnam currently has a hybrid variant, a mutation of the Indian variant, that’s more transmissible than the Indian variant and extremely airborne. This feels like India all over again. We’ll start hearing about it when the first cases arrive here. The government have announced the new red list countries just now, and guess what Vietnam isn’t on it. I’m fuming.

I’m not keeping my guard up when the government can’t be arsed @IloveSooty424. I’ve done my bit now. More than my bit.

Because the Government is being a twat and not showing common sense doesn’t mean we have to follow them. It’s a bit like when Cummings was an idiot and broke the rules and so many other people decided they could be idiots too.

Vietnam doesn't need to be on the red list because they won't let you in anyway
This!!!!!!!!
Really anazing that people post threads from the hip without bothering to think for a millisecond.

Australia is on the green list but they aren’t letting us in, not much logic with our lists.

If Viet Nam has been so closed up, how did these new cases happen, how did the Delta (Indian) variant get in?

I read something about how tight social distancing without vaccines encourages especially transmissible variants to emerge & become dominant.

Without strict social distancing then less transmissible variants don't have a disadvantage so would tend to predominate.

lljkk · 04/06/2021 06:12

ps: there is no Viet Nam variant. Just the Delta variant is in Viet Nam now, somehow.

Qatar is on the red list and isn't letting tourists in. Not everyone travelling at the moment are tourists!

AgentProvocateur · 04/06/2021 06:25

No need to ‘fume’, OP - I don’t think there will be an influx of Vietnamese tourists arriving in the U.K. any time soon, as the country has closed its borders. And also WHO has clarified that there is no new hybrid strain. www.reuters.com/world/india/who-rules-out-new-hybrid-covid-variant-vietnam-nikkei-2021-06-03/

If Viet Nam has been so closed up, how did these new cases happen, how did the Delta (Indian) variant get in?

Even if you act like North Korea, there is trade, illegal entry, porous bits of border, dual nationals. Nowhere can truly seal up.

LedByFools · 04/06/2021 11:26

The point of having our own border controls is that we are not dependent on other countries' restrictions.
So Vietnam might not be letting UK flights in, but from the UK point of view what matters is that we don't let Vietnam flights in - these travellers may be Vietnamese people who are not restricted by rules on entry into Vietnam, only rules on entry in other countries. e.g. the UK.
The UK still hasn't learnt that the red list needs to contain everywhere except those that are safe, rather than a short list of those that are unsafe.
it is like we are expecting to be protected by another countries rules on who can enter their country, rather than setting our own rules on who can entire our country.

lljkk · 04/06/2021 11:45

So... tight border controls are only somewhat working for Viet Nam.
