Is this gathering legal?

Pre Covid there used to be a pensioners bingo club in the function room of the local pub on a Monday night. The pub is willing to let the bingo club start up again as long as they do a written risk assessment and space the tables 2m apart, no more than 2 households per table, table service for food and drinks, masks on if they leave the table, etc.

I’m not convinced this is legal (at least not until 21st June). They’re planning to start up again next week and I’m worried my Gran will get fined as she’s the club chairperson. Does anyone know if it’s allowed?

There's been loads of live music indoors with groups able to book tables, with everyone served booze via table service. So I'm sure bingo isn't a problem.

Considering they are abiding by the same rules as most pubs and most bingo halls are now open anyway I don't see how it wouldn't be legal?

Dont see how it is any different to sitting in a pub or restaurant. Silly if isn't allowed.

Pubs are open and so are bingo halls, so what would be the difference between what your gran does and what they do?

CovidQuestion387 · 02/06/2021 20:30

Yes pubs are open and so are bingo halls. But they’re not a “club” with a chairperson and secretary and members. In that sense the bingo club is more like a private party, which I believe isn’t currently allowed. The pub is willing to let the club use the function room but if they’ve made a mistake it’s my Gran who’ll get fined for organising it.

Let your gran make her own decisions and have fun. She’s been isolated enough this last 15 months

Are you sure? I think it’ll be the pubs responsibility as it’s their venue, I’d double check that, I think your local council would be the place to start.

Either way I think it’s fine.

It’s no different to village halls letting clubs (yoga, baby groups, art groups etc.) go ahead as long as they keep to the guidelines on numbers and social distancing it’s perfectly legal
