Why the 15 minute wait after the vaccine? (And is that just for Pfizer?)

Is is all the vaccines that require a 15 minute wait and what is the reason?

In cast you have an allergic reaction - which would be quite rare

halfhope · 16/05/2021 11:17

in case - I meant. As far as I know it's with all vaccines.

Crunchymum · 16/05/2021 11:21

Interesting.

I've heard some people have to wait and others haven't? So thought it may be certain vaccines.

Why do they make you wait for 15 minutes with the second dose too?

I'd eaten nuts through my life but one day my body decided that are poison and I had an allergic reaction, allergies can just start at random.

idontlikealdi · 16/05/2021 11:23

I wasn't given an option to wait - in and out in about three minutes. AZ.

Fizzgigg · 16/05/2021 11:25

It's only Pfizer. I have a serious allergy and had AZ and asked was I supposed to wait and they told me no, that's only for Pfizer

Ifailed · 16/05/2021 11:25

Both times I was asked if I had driven to the jab centre, as I did I was asked to wait 15 minutes before driving off.

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 16/05/2021 11:25

I didn’t have to wait either . AZ. But I didn’t give anyone the opportunity to tell me to wait, I just walked out.

Peridot1 · 16/05/2021 11:27

I had to wait after my AZ one. 15 minutes in the car not in the venue. I’m assuming it will be the same for my second one this week.

I had to wait after my first flu jab at Boots a couple of years ago too.

Didn’t have to this year at GP surgery - it was a rapid conveyor belt system.

ssd · 16/05/2021 11:28

Because your car insurance doesn't cover you till 15 mins after your jab

TakeYourFinalPosition · 16/05/2021 11:28

You only have to wait if you’re driving, but it is for all vaccines. Or it should be. Some places seem to be a bit more lax in reminding people... although they seem to have got better around here for the second doses of AZ, I’ve had quite a few calls from friends while they’ve been waiting recently.

LeakyEye · 16/05/2021 11:29

I had the AZ and had to wait as I was driving but if you didn't drive you could go straight away. Dh had the Pfizer and had to wait 15 mins regardless

LeanneBrownsLonelyBraincell · 16/05/2021 11:31

I had to wait 15 minutes after Moderna.

My OH had to wait 15 minutes after AZ.

GlitteryFluff · 16/05/2021 11:31

I had Moderna and I had to wait 15mins and I didn't drive, I walked.

nordica · 16/05/2021 11:32

I had Moderna and everyone was asked to wait and then had a final check with the volunteer who asked if you felt OK.

I think they do it with the mRNA vaccines because it's a new type of vaccine, in case someone has an allergic reaction. I remember when they first started the rollout it was in the news that two health care workers had a reaction and needed treatment.

sleepwouldbenice · 16/05/2021 11:35

AZ if you are driving
Pfizer under any circumstances
Don't know about moderna

Due to risk of allergic reaction

pooonastick · 16/05/2021 11:35

Best practice is to monitor and wait 15 mins after any vaccine. If you haven't been asked to wait its because they aren't carrying out best practice. Anaphylaxis can occur after first or tenth exposure .

ImInStealthMode · 16/05/2021 11:38

There's just one big test centre where I live and everyone is asked to wait 15 minutes, no matter the vaccine they've had or how they're getting home. Seems more simple that way.

ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 16/05/2021 11:40

Everyone for Pfizer/Moderna. Car drivers only for AZ.

TheAlphaandtheOmega · 16/05/2021 11:41

I would have had to wait if I had been driving, AZ at large hub

Dementedswan · 16/05/2021 11:43

Pfizer and moderna you have to wait. Only have to wait 15 mins before driving for az. My dh drove me for my az and I was able to leave straight away.

motogogo · 16/05/2021 11:44

Only Pfizer because there's been allergic reactions. You can leave immediately after AZ but they recommend you don't drive for 15 mins. By the time you complete the paperwork and walk out to the car it's 10 mins at the big centres anyway so no biggy

EsmereldaMargaretNoteSpelling · 16/05/2021 11:45

Yep, 15 mins to wait before driving for AZ but wasn't asked to wait on the premises, just not drive for 15 mins.

Sometimesonly · 16/05/2021 11:51

This. Both ds and I have fainted after vaccines - far better that it happened in the waiting room than on the way home.

NotBot · 16/05/2021 12:31

I had to wait 15 mins after Pfizer. In reality, they let my row of seats go after 5 minutes 🙈
