Stupidly booked a holiday for June

I feel sick. I truly thought everything was looking so positive with the roadmap and that we would be having a great summer. Stupidly I therefore went ahead and booked a week’s holiday for late June through Airbnb with a host who has a strict cancellation policy (only allows cancellations within 48 hours of booking).

It’s two weeks since I made the booking so there’s no chance of getting my money back (though I think I may be entitled to a 50% refund if I cancel now - I need to double check).

I’m now really worried that we will be going back into lockdown due to the Indian variant and I won’t be able to go on holiday and will lose lots of money.

The reason I booked this place is because it was one of the very few still available in my chosen area - now I see that the cancellation policy is probably the reason why!

What would you do - cancel now to get half your money back or keep the booking in the hope that things will be okay by June?

I’m absolutely kicking myself for being such a complete and utter idiot Sad

I'm going to the IOW in June. I'm sure it will be fine. I went to Cornwall last August as you could still holiday in household groups. Stop worrying and look forward!

idiot766 · 15/05/2021 08:23

Thank you everyone, I really hope I can go!

We have a cottage with Airbnb and have a strict cancellation rule ( and we’re fully booked )
Should there be another lockdown and you’re unable to travel , then Airbnb will refund you
The cottage owners don’t have the payment until after the guest has arrived
I think you’ll be fine
I can’t wait to get away myself ! Don’t know when that will be though , but I do know it will be somewhere in the U.K.
I hope the sun will shine for you 🌞and you have a great time

FrozenVag · 15/05/2021 08:41

At least you haven’t booked a holiday in bloody ISRAEL of all places

Between the pandemic and emerging war.... there’s like a 10% percent chance that’s gonna happen !!!

SpilltheTea · 15/05/2021 09:16

I'd keep the booking and stay positive.

Twizbe · 15/05/2021 09:16

We've booked a UK holiday for June as well.

I think the chances are good we will be able to go. I really don't think they want to lock us all down again.

I think what we will see is surge vaccination and testing in areas where cases rise. The goal now is to keep people out of hospital and dying not necessarily to keep people from catching it.

cushioncovers · 15/05/2021 09:18

Op try not to be too hard on yourself. Thousands of families have done the same and booked a U.K. break this summer.

Fundays12 · 15/05/2021 09:20

I booked a holiday last night in late June. It's for a beautiful campsite an hour away with stunning beaches. I expect to go though.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 15/05/2021 09:25

I went away in April and I have UK breaks booked for May, July and August and an overseas trip booked for August. I fully expect the UK breaks to happen!

Flowerlane · 15/05/2021 09:29

We have 3 uk breaks booked at the moment. One in 2 weeks one in July and one in august. I fully expect to be going on them all. Smile

Honestly think you will be fine, I personally would not cancel.

ensete · 15/05/2021 09:30

We own UK holiday cottages, legally if there is another lockdown we have to refund people. Having said that, I very much doubt there will be another lockdown so soon, just the slowing of easing restrictions

RedcurrantPuff · 15/05/2021 09:30

@idiot766

No, it’s in the UK! So no issues with flights or quarantine or anything like that, thank goodness. I’m just worried that we’ll be plunged back into lockdown again and not allowed to leave our local areas...
I doubt that will happen by June.
MilduraS · 15/05/2021 09:33

If you're going to lose the money, why would you cancel now? Keep the booking and hope for the best.

Mathshelpme · 15/05/2021 09:34

Both UK cases and deaths continue to fall or stay low. The idea that they will suddenly jump so much it leads to a lockdown prior to June is (sorry) ridiculous.

Newgirls · 15/05/2021 09:38

I’d be amazed if UK holidays can’t happen. Purely for the fact the gov won’t want to bail out that industry.

Franklin12 · 15/05/2021 09:41

I thought you meant abroad. Chill, you have a very high chance of going unless it’s in a place like Bolton (which I am sure it isn’t!)

usernotfound0000 · 15/05/2021 09:47

I think you'll be fine. Stays in UK self catering accommodation have been allowed since the last loosening, worst case restaurants might be restricted to outdoors again but I think you'll be ok. I'm going away at the start of June and it hasn't even occurred to me that we might not be able to.

SprayedWithDettol · 15/05/2021 10:02

Things won’t be the same as other lockdowns as we are now well into our vaccination programme, which we weren’t during other lockdowns. The key thing to watch for is hospital admissions tbh not infection rates. That will tell us if the vaccine is working.

Gymsmile21 · 15/05/2021 10:04

It was stupid but you know that. The money is gone now. So cancel now, get half back and see it as money up as you wouldn’t have it or a holiday come late June.

Gymsmile21 · 15/05/2021 10:05

Ohh thought you meant over seas.

Don’t cancel you will be fine

Neonprint · 15/05/2021 10:13

I honestly have no idea why any one uses Airbnb. Stuff like this with the cancellation policy just make me feel its all in the host's favour.

I'm going to Liverpool for a few nights at the end of June for the biennial. But it's a full refund cancellation (actually pay on arrival but same thing as no deposit or money owed on cancellation). It's a bit of work as I work in the cultural sector. But mainly a holiday.

I don't blame you at all for wanting a break. But I do think booking without option to cancel is a bit mad. However its also a bit of a piss take from Airbnb to allow this right now.

There will only be localised lockdowns. Boris has said and hasnt changed that view. The government haven't got the money to fund another national lockdown
NewMatress · 15/05/2021 10:18

There won't be another lockdown. Lockdown is to protect the NHS. There's no evidence the Indian variant will increase pressure on the NHS in a population where the vast majority of the people who might otherwise have needed hospitalization have been vaccinated.

If your break is in UK it will be fine.

I think people booking foreign holidays are taking quite a risk, but that's because they might not let us in rather than we won't be able to travel.

IndigoC · 15/05/2021 10:22

I have a trip to the Lake District booked for June. I’m 95% expecting it to go ahead. This government never moves very fast, even if it’s necessary I don’t think we’d be in lockdown again that soon.

Surely if we go into another lockdown you'll be entitled to your money back as legally we won't be allowed to travel/stay in other accommodation?

How did you pay? If you paid by credit card I'm sure you'll be covered. If not, get a credit card and only use it for big purchases where you need protection going forward (I know that doesn't help you now but it may later down the line).

I'm not claiming to know but I'd put my money on no lockdown until winter. I don't think Boris will put us into another lockdown or restrictions before then as the numbers are so low compared to previous lockdowns, but of course that could change overnight and it is purely my opinion. Don't forget a lot more people are vaccinated here Vs other countries including India and the government are really pushing the vaccination program to protect more people so we don't suffer longer than we need to. I know I'm being pretty optimistic, but positive thinking and all!!!
