Tourists in the UK?!

Visited a popular beauty spot at the weekend in Wales, all allowed now of course. Was really shocked at the amount of overseas visitors there?! Loads of hire cars, overheard one family (maybe French/Spanish) talking about just arriving in the UK to a car park attendant. Just feels like all the restrictions still in place are pointless is travel is still happening? Has anyone else noticed this at typical touristy places?

@nonaomi if you can’t grasp the shear hypocrisy of people being allowed to holiday in this country but it being illegal for us to leave then anything I say to you will be pointless. If the virus is such a threat that we cannot leave incase we bring back new variants I would not expect to be having tourists visiting. And yes maybe they isolated but I’m pretty sure no one is coming on holiday to the uk and isolating for 10 days when they get here that’s a long holiday!

The checks on our 'home quarantine' (after people magic themselves home from the airport) certainly weren't very thorough (or happening at all) as recently as early April.
Lockdown for us, apparently not for international travellers...

The government is alleged to have lost track of approximately 150,000 international travellers who have arrived in the UK since the latest border controls were introduced just over seven weeks ago, i can reveal.

There are also concerns that of those who have been ordered to isolate for 10 days at home after flying into the UK, only a tiny proportion have been checked to see if they are obeying quarantine laws.

Could be people like my parents who are staying several months. So when we go out and about, we are going to get dirty looks now? Because we aren't speaking English. Joke. I didn't make the rules, but we stuck to them and don't deserve to get funny looks.

Well all I can state by way of return is that if that online news piece is to believed in it's entirety the people I know who entered the UK in the last month or so must have been really darned unlucky, they all must have been in that supposedly tiny proportion who actually were checked by phone/police..

Travel is definitely happening. I met a client in work who had been away for weeks in Pakistan back in March. Wasn’t the only one I’d met in a two week period who had been somewhere else either. Lots of ‘ very sick’ family members they just have to visit with the whole family seems to be a way around it or the excuse given anyway Hmm

Same here. We were checked very well and so was everyone who arrived at that time.

The press are making it seem like there are all these people coming in and not sticking to rules just to inflame us further. It gets clicks. It gets people to be outraged. Most countries have travel restrictions themselves on overseas travel..

In any case. No point in arguing with the ignorant, who believe there are lots of tourists just because of some number plates and foreign languages. Get back in your hole and write to your mate Nigel.

Tealightsandd · 03/05/2021 16:49

The tourism is relevant in that it's a bit off to allow international travel whilst the country was in lockdown - with no or limited domestic travel permitted.

Separately, proper border control during a pandemic has nothing to do with someone's passport or where they're from. Proper pandemic border control wouldn't exempt British travellers from quarantine or any other Covid containment measures. It would apply equally to all incoming travellers.

The UK government prioritised international travel over everything else. Hence our repeated long lockdowns, very high death rate, ruined businesses, damaged physical and mental health, and 5 year NHS backlog (made worse by the fact that many traumatised NHS workers are considering a career change post pandemic).

I’m bemused at how all these Spaniards are managing to get across lockdown town borders to get to the airports so they can visit sunny lockdown Wales, there were two police checkpoints making sure people didn’t leave their towns on my drive to work in Spain this morning. Unless of course it’s made up.

@Synthesiser

That's a bit worrying. Haven't the French recently started another lockdown due to cases being very high there?
Um no they haven't.

The most recent lockdown restrictions are just beginning to ease and there is a "roadmap" similar to the one that the UK has.

President Macron's speech last week was reported in detail on the BBC
