Can I take a day trip on a train?

Am confused by the rules and Googling hasn't helped. I'm desperate to leave the city I live in, haven't left for almost a year. Wondering about taking my DC on a train trip 40 mins away for a walk around, lunch then return. Is this allowed? Thank you x

Which of the home nations are you in?

Blurpblorp · 29/04/2021 10:42

Oh yes sorry that's pretty vital. England...

Yes why wouldn't you??

Yes, the stay at home/stay local order ended a month ago :-) You can even travel to Scotland and Wales now, and go on holiday (in self-contained accommodation, with your bubble, at the mo - hotels from 17 May, I think) in the UK. The Beeb has the latest rules: www.bbc.co.uk/news/explainers-52646738

I've not been on holiday yet, but I've been driving around for day trips to meet up with further-flung family and friends outside, and it's been a real tonic to see new faces and new places - get on that train and I hope you have a wonderful time!

I can see why the OP would be confused as we have been encouraged to use public transport as little as possible.

AnguaResurgam · 29/04/2021 11:15

Travelling for recreation is permitted.

But public transport is still 'avoid unnecessary travel' so I don't think there is a proper answer for this one.

Gong by car, if you have one, might be the safest solution

SmidgenofaPigeon · 29/04/2021 11:19

Yup. I’m going to Box Hill this weekend. Actually most stations say to LIMIT the number of journeys you take, not only take necessary ones.

MRex · 29/04/2021 11:20

Yes it's fine, go

nordica · 29/04/2021 11:22

I took public transport to get to an appointment on Monday and was really surprised just how many people there were! It was during the day and I don't remember seeing the train and tube so busy at that time of the day even back in 2019 in normal times.

You are absolutely permitted to do the trip you suggest and no one will ask you where you are going. The stay at home order ended a while ago as pp says.

Blurpblorp · 29/04/2021 11:34

Amazing - thank you all! My gosh I can't wait!!!

Do it - I'm having to regularly commute by train and there are loads* of people going for daytrips / shopping etc. It's still possible to social distance most of the time.

*more than none - it's a bit of a shock to the system, having had to commute throughout and having got used to empty trains Grin

Normally, I'll occasionally use public transport just for the fun of it if I'm in no rush. I have my own car so I'm not currently doing jollies for the sake of it. I also have mask issues so it swerves those issues and it saves capacity for people that have a greater need... including as transport to access somewhere for pleasure. It's not healthy to keep restricting life to "essentials" only.

OP, enjoy the change of scenery.

I went to my nearest city on the train for a shopping trip last week, about an hours journey each way.. didn’t even think about it to be honest, we are allowed to go anywhere now right?

TooManyPlatesInMotion · 29/04/2021 15:41

Yes. Enjoy!

jupitermars1345 · 29/04/2021 15:57

Yes you can 😃

Sillysop92 · 29/04/2021 16:53

Yes of course you can, you can go to Wales and Scotland by train if you wish. I've been on the tube lots of times just because I've gone out for the day. Enjoy and have lots of fun!
