Brother stuck abroad with covid - needs to travel home

My brother works abroad but is scheduled to come home end of the month. He has just tested positive today.

In order to be allowed to fly, he has to test negative 2 days before. Theres plenty of time for him to (hopefully!!) get well and obvs complete at least 10 days isolation but he will likely isolate til he flies.

My concern is that testing long after you've had covid can still produce a positive result. When I had it I was advised that any more tests taken in the next 90 days could produce a positive result.

What if he still tests positive in a month?!

I should add here that he is more than willing to push the flight back if needed, if actually positive. But he cannot add another 90 days on to his time there just to take him past any time that a positive result may show.

He’ll need to get advice from his doctor and accept that it might be a while before he can travel.

He will go (well) over the time he is permitted to remain in the country if he has to do the 90 days.

He should contact immigration in the country he is in and explain the situation, hopefully his visa can be extended to accommodate

He almost certainly won’t have to do the 90 days. While it is possible to test positive up to 90 days later, I don’t think it is particularly common. Some places test 10-14 days after the initial positive test before they certify you as recovered and they don’t seem to have huge numbers of people isolating for 90 days.

I believe in some countries you need 2 negative tests to leave hospital following covid. So, while it is POSSIBLE to test positive for covid upto 90 days post illness, it is in no way common.
I hope your brother recovers well, and can fly home as planned.

You’re getting ahead of yourself OP. No point fretting over 90 days. Take it as it happens.

You are probably right!

Just panicking a bit. Plus the tests arent cheap so if he continually gets positives. What a palava.

Panicking won’t change the outcome. Wasted energy. It’s not a palaver yet. There’s no drama.
