Moderna vaccine has arrived

It's starting to be rolled out in Wales today. I believe it's arrived in Scotland too so am quite curious as to why it won't be rolled out for another couple of weeks in England. I know the first batch is quite small but I'm really hoping I'll get that one and that I'll be invited soon.

Great news. I'm 30 so I expect this is the one I will get.

Mindymomo · 07/04/2021 07:44

I understand 500,000 does are arriving later this month, will be interesting to see what age these are given to.

mrsknottschicken · 07/04/2021 08:04

I expect it’ll go to 45+ in Wales as they announced yesterday that their rollout to 50+ is complete. I hope the same thing happens in England. It must be in England now too as they wouldn’t deliver to the different nations separately would they?

I've got everything crossed that dh and I will get this jab. Both of us are 45+.

Frazzled2207 · 07/04/2021 08:19

It is great news - yeah if
been delivered to Wales and scotland it must be in the country.
I’m guessing that for whatever reason they want to say that all 50+ have been offered a jab before moving on to the 40+, partly with Moderna. Wales has already said it’s done with the 50+ age group (is also ahead on second doses). That day should come soon in England, hope so anyway. I’ve had novavax (trial) but keen for 40 something husband to get Moderna.

wintertravel1980 · 07/04/2021 08:45

Based on the famous Scotland's leaked delivery schedule, the first Moderna batch arriving this week was only meant to be 50k. The whole April delivery was supposed to be 200k (50k per week).

If 200k had been upsized to 500k, it is great news but it is still only a drop in the ocean. There are over 4mm people in the 45-49 age group. Even if up to 25% of them had been vaccinated, this still leaves demand of over 3mm. Moderna will only be able to cover up to 20% of that.

I am more hopeful regarding Pfizer. If the Scotland's delivery schedule still holds, we should be expecting extra 4mm doses in April. This will be more meaningful and can hopefully be used towards the new first doses. UK should already have sufficient stock for the second doses.

MonsterMash2210 · 07/04/2021 09:05

I think in England we are focusing on 2nd doses. I know a few people who have been called for their second doses earlier than they had originally booked.

I am assuming that is why we won’t be getting/ using Moderna for a few weeks.

wintertravel1980 · 07/04/2021 09:22

I think in England we are focusing on 2nd doses.

Yes - for AZ. We were initially expecting nearly 14mm AZ doses in April. This would have allowed us to both give out second doses and vaccinate younger population. A meaningful portion of the supply was supposed to come from India and potentially EU. These sources have now been cut off / put on hold. As a result, we had to limit vaccine offerings and focus on the second doses.

Pfizer is different. We are supposed to already have enough supply for the second doses (according to the Scotland's schedule). There has been no recent press/government noise regarding Pfizer delays so I am assuming the company is roughly sticking to the agreed schedule (which assumes 4mm extra doses delivered throughout April - roughly 1mm per week). Some of April deliveries can be used for younger age groups / unvaccinated 50+.

wintertravel1980 · 07/04/2021 09:25

And 500k of Moderna should hopefully follow the Pfizer pattern. April deliveries can be used for new doses (although Moderna's supply will not shift the dial).

Jo99996 · 07/04/2021 09:43

Shouldn’t send any to Scotland. Let Krankie go crawling to her mates at the EU for some.

LaBrujaPiruja · 07/04/2021 09:52

What a nice thought, @Jo99996, taking into account that the ModeRNA vaccines arriving atm have been produced in Switzerland and Spain.

One of the reasons I like Mumsnet is the high standard of political debate. Hmm

Yes but ordered by the UK government who she’s so set against.

Let her join the EU’s procurement and organisation of it all.

I live in Wales and know a lot of people 50+ who haven't been offered the vaccine yet so I'd take what the Welsh government say with a pinch of salt.
LaBrujaPiruja · 07/04/2021 10:47

@Jo99996
Missing the point, and your thought is still very very nice. Nothing else to add. It’s not worth it.

ChloeDecker · 07/04/2021 10:51

According to the news, Wales isn’t focusing on the 45+ age bracket for Moderna, as the first person to receive it has been a 24 year old unpaid carer for her grandmother.

No its not missing the point, its a perfect chance to show Scotland what Independence from the UK means in real terms.

That would be group 6 here in England, rather than the general group 10.
ChloeDecker · 07/04/2021 11:14

I agree. Abraxan. I was interested if Wales would reserve Moderna for the next age group (as a few on Mumsnet have said that due to second doses etc. Moderna would be used for the next groups waiting) and continue using the other vaccines for the other groups that have been able to book for a while but looks like Wales haven’t.
Very glad to see more being vaccinated though.

If it means not being shackled to people like you I'm all for it tbh @Jo99996

Half of the 50+ people I know have not been offered the jab let alone had it. Issues have been widespread enough that they were on the news yesterday. I wonder why they announced that that cohort was done? Surely they must have the data and know that it isn't?

Jo99996 · 07/04/2021 11:53

If it means the English dont keep paying for the Scots then its great for us. maybe we can then have free prescrptions etc
UnderHisAye · 07/04/2021 12:05

You're annoyed about free prescriptions, contact your MP. Maybe don't wish that we have our access to vaccines restricted, causing more illness and death in the population. Bit extreme maybe.

Jo99996 · 07/04/2021 12:24

To be fair we don’t need to campaign our MPs to cut off Scotland. Krankie is going to get it cut off herself.

peak2021 · 07/04/2021 12:26

Moderna vaccine beginning is good news.

@Jo99996 and others, please stop insulting Janette Tough's comic character by comparing her to Nicola Sturgeon.
