Covid/covid jab in neurological disability - any experience?

Would be grateful to hear from family members or carers of adults with significant/progressive neurological conditions (along the lines of motor-neurone/ALD, Parkinsons, epilepsy or similar).

How did they get through covid or what reaction they had to jab if they had it.

My Dad has PD. 1st dose of AZ 3 weeks ago - no reaction whatsoever. He is 76.

Mum has severe MS and had her jab in January. She had some sickness a few days afterwards but other than that was fine
Couple of other people at the nursing home had sickness and and also a but like flu I was told but it was only for a few days max
They hoping to have the 2nd jab due soon
I think it varies a lot sorry if this no help

The only person I myself know about was ill early on and died with possibly because of DNR rule, no one was allowed to visit back then.

It worries me as any illness results in a step drop in overall ability and never a full recovery.

My FIL has PD and had the Pfeizer jab. No side effects at all. Age 75.

I have epilepsy (on two medications) & have had two Pfizer vaccinations through working in a hospital... was also offered the Astra Zeneca from my gp surgery.
Had no side effects both times luckily.

Charlieandlola · 04/04/2021 15:36

my daugher has epilepsy ( not entirely controlled). she spiked a temperature of 39 despite paraacetamol 12 hours after her Pfizer jab and had seizures until I could get her temp down. A work colleague who also has epilepsy had the same reaction with the AZ vaccine. Am dreading her having the second jab, but it would have been much worse with 12+ days of fever with Actual Covid.

DH has a very rare neurological condition. We both had AZ. I had more of a reaction than he did. He had a sore throat for half a day and was tired. That was it.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 04/04/2021 15:44

My dad 76 with quite severe Parkinson's. He didn't have any issues at all with either jab.

Pushkinia · 04/04/2021 15:49

I have underlying neurological condition and had AstraZeneca. I felt really rough for 48 hours - flu like symptoms, aching muscles (my neck was particularly bad but my disability causes neck problems anyway) and raging thirst that not even a litre and a half of water helped. Once the 48 hours was up, I started feeling better and I was fine by the following day.

Thank u all.
@Charlieandlola, u reminded me, we had a case of fits in the past with high temperature too.

My dad, 76, has severe MS. Had his first dose of Pfizer, no effects other than sore arm. Same for my similar age mother who’s in good health.

Athinginitself · 04/04/2021 21:52

My sister has epilepsy as well as learning disabilities, she had a seizure after her jab (likely due to temp) but was otherwise totally fine.

weegiemum · 04/04/2021 21:54

I have a rare neuro illness and was told by my consultant to have the jag. I've had my first one, had a day of feeling 7nderthe weather but fine now.

moominmomma1234 · 04/04/2021 23:36

My dad, PD and epilepsy. Had covid last sept. Managed the illness at home. Said it was like bad flu. He Has been a bit weak since. Occasional fall.might be due to his physio being paused over lockdown rather than effects from the virus but i dont know.

He had AZ first dose in jan. no side effects at all. Second jab due next week

My mum has MS (as well as other Heath conditions) and had the Pfizer in January and her second dose last week. No side effects at all, no temp spike or anything. I was amazed - the amount of medication she’s on and things wrong she’s the one I would have thought would have a reaction!

SunnySomer · 05/04/2021 12:21

I have epilepsy. One dose of AZ so far and I felt ill and fluey for a week but I think that’s just due to the variability of side effects. No seizures etc. I took paracetamol and kept myself cool

Thank you all. Our lives are very restricted anyway so just weighing up the risks..
