The COVID stats have highlighted to me the number of deaths related to smoking

Everyone is shocked and upset at the numbers of deaths in Uk and across the world from COVID which is around 3million

The WHO state deaths caused from smoking is 8million and expect this to rise considerably over the next 10 years

If a world comes together to shut down and ends up with this many deaths from COVID in one year does it not illustrate the lack of action against preventable smoking related deaths ?

Smoking is a choice. It is extremely well known to cause cancer & lung disease (amongst a host of other problems). Don’t smoke & you won’t die of the side effects. Your choice. I’ve never smoked in my entire life. It looks gross. It stinks. It costs a fortune. It causes cancer. That was enough discouragement for me as a teen & continues as an adult.

We’ve done plenty as a country to discourage smoking & stop if effecting those who choose not too. You can’t smoke indoors in any public venue, buses, taxis, planes, cinemas etc cigarettes are hidden behind shutters now in shops. There are pictures of diseased hearts & lungs on packets..

Maybe more needs to be done in poorer countries ..

It does make me eye roll though at the things in life we take risks doing. And don’t bat an eyelid.

Quite the opposite. It illustrates the hypocritical, hysterical, utterly disproportionate response to Covid.

Tobacco sales mean tax revenue to the government (ours & others). That would be a massive source of cash to turn off.

Being a smoker isn’t contagious.

You don't "catch" smoking.
There is a choice involved in smoking.
The effects of smoking aren't immediate as they are with Covid.

Thing is, we are all going to die of something. It's not as if those people won't die eventually if they don't smoke. What are the numbers for alcohol related deaths? Or car related deaths?

Alcohol causes similar problems (obviously not lung cancer) but it’s socially acceptable.

They also report that Obesity has reached epidemic proportions globally, with at least 2.8 million people dying each year as a result of being overweight or obese.

So there's no risk to people from passive smoking after all? Good to know! I'll smoke where I please then as clearly there's no need to have smoking laws as it isn't a danger to others.

People choose to smoke. They choose to smell, spend loads of money and get cancer.

People choose to drink alcohol and pretend people cannot see they have a drink problem and failing health.

I used to smoke, I’m fine with people smoking if they choose to if it doesn’t affect me
