Confused by vaccine summons

BoKatan · 22/03/2021 14:53

Everyone I know in my town in their 30s and 40s got a text at the weekend inviting us to get a vaccine at our GP surgery this week, including DH and I (no underlying conditions).

I'm confused because I thought the government had said no appointments for under 50s until after April. Can anyone explain what is going on? Is there a shortage or not?

No idea about total supplies, but if they have supplies in your area and offer just go.

2020isnotbehaving · 22/03/2021 14:57

Seems some areas are cracking on as have supply which is unfair. As they agreed group 10 would be 40plus as age is still a factor. Now it’s just post code lottery for under 50s as we can’t book on national site.

XenoBitch · 22/03/2021 14:58

It depends on area, their own supply and demographic of patients.
It is not a summons though... it is an invite.

BoKatan · 22/03/2021 15:04

I'm in my late 30s. It doesn't sit right with me that a teacher or police officer etc who is 49 in another part of the country has to wait but I can get mine this week.

I just got one, and am 49. V thrilled! SE London.

purplejungle · 22/03/2021 15:09

Just get it. The more people vaccinated asap the safer we all are.

dizzydizzydizzy · 22/03/2021 15:10

Just book your appointment. You have been invited to do so.

minniemoocher · 22/03/2021 15:11

Vaccines have a shelf life, the government has allocated vaccine supplies based on the local population but if people aren't coming forward in the older age groups they don't want to waste it. Most of my 40 something friends have been vaccinated now, my gp is being quite creative with the allocation of group 6 and carers!

starbrightstarlight8888 · 22/03/2021 15:13

I'm in my 30s and had mine 10 days ago

Is this REALLY why you're questioning this? MN seems to be full of people who always seem to find a way to question getting vaccinated - e.g. calling it a "summons".

I understand that but you not taking up the invite will mean nothing to those people; it won’t be couriered across the country to be used in that manner.

There’s a bigger picture here, every vaccine administered contributes to the populations safety and journey towards a semblance of normality. If you’ve been legitimately invited and want to have the vaccine do your bit and get it.

RaindropsSplashRainbows · 22/03/2021 15:15

It will help stop spread in your area. They must be short of older takers so I'd just go for it.

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 22/03/2021 15:16

I'm 50 and I'm totally fine that you've been summoned before me. The more the merrier (or the more jags, the less societal transmission).

clairethewitch70 · 22/03/2021 15:16

In my 50's and nothing, with lots of medical conditions but not group 6. In Wales

Pastanred · 22/03/2021 15:18

People who are 50 don’t need to wait to be contacted they can book online right now under age criteria

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/03/2021 15:19

It's a logistics thing. The vaccines were bagged and tagged a week or more ago and sent on down the line.

If there was an emergency shortage they could have been diverted but, if other areas are within tolerance (which they currently seem to be) the shipment carries on and is given to whomever is next on that areas list.

So just go. Add yourselves to the Road Map Out!

whatswithtodaytoday · 22/03/2021 15:19

I'm very envious OP. My GP has a very strongly worded message on their homepage saying they won't be vaccinating under-50s so don't ask.

Go get it and be happy!

It's not a summons.

I'm asthmatic, 40s and likely won't be allowed to have it until May now.

Just get it done.

Catlover10 · 22/03/2021 15:26

I’m 27 and also had a text for this weekend. It says very clearly in my text that it’s specifically the AstraZeneca Vaccine so I’m assuming lots of people have been cancelling because of the scares around side effects.

ChequerBoard · 22/03/2021 15:27

Massive differences between different areas of the country. My DD18 (asthmatic) had her vaccine yesterday via her school which is in a different county to where we live. I am 50 (also asthmatic) and am getting mine on Friday, so she beat me to it!

BoKatan · 22/03/2021 15:57

Crikey this forum is ridiculous at times. You use one word in error and everyone assumes the worst of you.

For reference, I'm pleased I've been allocated a slot. AND I signed up for all the trials but never got selected. I am FAR removed from anti vaxxers.

I'm just very confused because I was feeling despondent last week about the announcement of the delay and then got my text.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/03/2021 16:08

Ignore those posts. Concentrate on those with good advice.

Just because there are some rather repressed people posting doesn't mean you have to take the slightest bit of notice of their uber pedantry.

Same at mine. I'm 48.
