My dad was rejected for vaccine due to high blood pressure.

My dad doesn’t live in the U.K.
He was booked for his vaccine today but got rejected because his blood pressure was 160/105.
I thought that hypertension was not one of the reasons not to have the vaccine?
Are they being too cautious? There have been a spate of people dying soon after the vaccines but they said it was only a coincidence as they also had co morbidities. I’m worried that my dad cannot get a vaccine and he is at high risk. He is in his 60s, not fit, obese and has high BP and high cholesterol. He doesn’t exercise, doesn’t eat healthily and takes medicines for his BP. He has been talking about travelling abroad and I think that would be super risky.
Anyone with high blood pressure who’s been vaccinated? Is there a vaccine that’s better than the other?

He needs to speak to his Dr about getting his blood pressure under control tbh or he’s at risk of a stroke or CVD -never mind covid!

We don’t take peoples BP’s before vaccinating but plenty of people on BP medication, who would have high BP without it, have had the vaccine with no problems, DM included.

I'm 43 and have hypertension- I'm a nurse so have had my first dose of Pfizer back in January with no problems Smile

pucelleauxblanchesmains · 13/03/2021 14:33

My dad - aged 65 in the UK - has hypertension he is medicated for (although only slightly overweight rather than obese) and he's been vaccinated just fine.

@Whatwhyhowwherewho. Thanks for your reply!! But I assume those people have it under control? That’s why they are okay. I’m sure that even my dad would be okay but the people vaccinating him are erring on the side of caution. I really don’t know what to do about my dad. He doesn’t seem to know how to make lifestyle choices. Maybe he doesn’t know what high blood pressure really means. He didn’t go to school.

I've got high blood pressure and got the vaccine yesterday but my blood pressure is close to normal due to the medication I'm on. If he's medicated but his bottom number is still 105, then he really needs to speak to his GP to review his medication levels as anything over 90 is considered concern.

Purplewithred · 13/03/2021 14:54

Where does he live?

Cookerhood · 13/03/2021 15:28

No-one here at the mass vaccination centres would know or even think about your blood pressure. I'm a volunteer vaccinator & it wasn't mentioned in the training & it's not something we are told to ask people.

ittakes2 · 13/03/2021 15:43

I have naturally low blood pressure. It went down to 60/40 when I was pregnant. The highest it’s ever been is 135 over something but it’s usually more like 115/120 over something. The day after my vaccine it went up to 165/137! My husband made me rest for a few hours. You need to speak to his doctor.

Mosaic123 · 13/03/2021 15:45

A lot of people's BP would rise just before getting the vaccine!

Whatwhyhowwherewho · 13/03/2021 15:48

@Peridotty my point is that, unless a reading is taken, then no one knows if it’s under control and people aren’t having BP checks before being vaccinated here.
I had several patients this week who came for their annual checks at the surgery and discovered their BP has increased so their medication needs tweaking. The majority of them have already had their Covid Vaccs with no problem despite their BP currently being too high.

Your dad needs to discuss with his Dr getting his BP under control.

Just going to wait for more reassuring comments, got a bit concerned when i saw the op 😀, I’ve just assumed they wack it in your arm and bobs your uncle

Ive got uncontrolled hypertension and my vaccine is booked in for next week

andadietcoke · 13/03/2021 22:14

I'm on the Novavax vaccine trial and have hypertension. They were actively recruiting people with high BP - it's probably why I was chosen. No issues at all.

WhoWants2Know · 13/03/2021 22:57

They didn't check my BP when I had the vaccine, but 160/105 would be fairly usual for me depending on the time of day or length of time since taking my meds.

AccidentallyOnPurpose · 13/03/2021 23:03

They don't check BP in the UK before the vaccine.

My mum lives in a country where they do. The day of the vaccine her was stupidly high. Purely situational as it hasn't been high since. They gave her some meds on the day, and eventually it was low enough for her to go ahead with the vaccine.

He should go back to his GP, have a review of the meds, keep checking his BP and surely the vaccine can be rebooked.

doireallyneedaname · 14/03/2021 07:16

My 77 year old dad has medicated hypertension and was vaccinated. He received AZ.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/03/2021 10:45

Thank god for that! Mine goes through the roof when I have it taken at the doctors normally so if I know I'm having a vaccine as well they'd think I was on my last legs!

Peridotty · 14/03/2021 10:47

He went home and checked his BP and it was around 140/90. Sometimes a bit lower! It was purely situational as he had been quite worried about having the vaccine done. Anything you can do for such cases?? How to lower BP before the vaccine? The news is all about several people dying after the vaccine where he lives. The health authorities are recommending that people with severe disease like high blood pressure and diabetes don’t vaccinate yet.

Any meds will have to be given by his GP. Was the vaccine centre there or at a separate place? He needs to ring his GP, explain the situation and find out if he can be given anything before he goes for it and reschedule.
