2nd home in Wales over Easter?

SunshiningBetty · 12/03/2021 16:47

Our family has a second home in Wales. It’s just a tiny cottage but very old as it’s been in the family for generations. We haven’t been down to check it since August last year.

I know Wales is supposed to be opening self catering accommodation for Easter and domestic overnight stays will be allowed from 12th April in England so will we be allowed down to stay there for the last week of the Easter hols? Or aren’t we allowed to cross the border?

Nope. Self catering accommodation is only for people in Wales over Easter hols sorry.

VerityWibbleWobble · 12/03/2021 17:30

What's his name said no they don't want people crossing the border to take a holiday.

Akire · 12/03/2021 17:33

They are saying not to book anyone outside the area. With it being a holiday home there is a chance you may get away with it but equally they may be stopping and checking cars over Easter too.

DragonMamma · 12/03/2021 17:33

No, Wales is strictly for those living here currently, I’m afraid.

Does it matter that we actually own the property rather than it being a rental?

It looks like there are going to be a lot of disappointed people, owners and holidaymakers, over Easter.

That link says
'Owners of self contained accommodation can't take bookings from people otuside of England'

  • obviously there's a typo of 'outside' but if it's otherwise correct then people can go from Wales to England?
Palavah · 12/03/2021 17:50
  • argh! to Wales from England*!
changi · 12/03/2021 17:56

'Owners of self contained accommodation can't take bookings from people otuside of England'

Presumably, if you own the accommodation you wouldn't need to book.

mumonthehill · 12/03/2021 17:57

Please do not come. You cannot travel into wales from England and honestly give it until May half term and you should be able to. There is a bit of unease about second home owners thinking they can still come for a holiday. Until today we had the stay at home message and even now we can only travel 5 miles.

Dbwoshem · 12/03/2021 18:03

We own a static on a holiday camp in North Wales (mostly private, not holiday makers).

Everyone on the site Facebook group, including the owners are saying 12th April 100% fine. We can stay anywhere in England from that date, and the Welsh self catering accommodation will already be open so there is no reason why we can't?
When Mark drakeford said the easter holidays, I presume he means the bank holiday weekend. We will be coming down to open up on the 12th

Vanillaradio · 12/03/2021 18:06

Didn't he say that English people shouldn't come to Wales because the law in England won't allow them to? After April 12 the law in England does allow you to stay away from your home so won't it be allowed then??

Ymlaen · 12/03/2021 18:08

It's England'a regulations that stop you coming to Wales, not Drakeford's fault. If you live in England you are not allowed to stay overnight and that includes in your second home in Wales.

changi · 12/03/2021 18:14

After April 12 the law in England does allow you to stay away from your home so won't it be allowed then??

That's how I understood it. I'm happy to wait.

SunshiningBetty · 12/03/2021 18:15

Oh that’s fine then! We can go for the last week of the Easter holidays Grin excellent!

The 12th April date is not a fixed date yet, personally I wouldn't count any chickens (Johnson is a fan of last munte changes!)

Easter hols are the week before and the week after the Bh weekend, aren’t they? So kids back to school on the 12th?
Vanillaradio · 12/03/2021 18:25

Depends on your region. Ds is still off school w/c 12th (unfortunately we have the previous week off work which is when our already cancelled Wales holiday was booked for!)

Dbwoshem · 12/03/2021 18:35

We are in the Midlands and our kids don't go back until Monday the 19th April.

I do think both Wales and England are doing the right thing by not opening up over the bank Holiday because they would get a huge influx of people.

As I say we will definitely be coming week beginning the 12th and coming home on Sunday 18th. Not much will be open of course but a walk on the beach will be enough for us

SunshiningBetty · 12/03/2021 18:44

We are in the midlands too so have the week after the 12th off. Fabulous Smile
