Will the janssen vaccine be available soon(ish)

I know the janssen one dose has been approved in the US. Will it be available in the UK soonish, i just really like the thought of only needing one dose. (I'm not bothered by the 66% efficacy as v low risk) I just want to be able to travel easily in summer 🤞🏻.

Also I know technically we don't get to pick, but I have few friends who did pick between AZ and pfizer.

Approval may come soon but actual deliveries will probably take longer.

The UK has secured 30 million doses of Janssen’s vaccine, with deliveries expected to arrive in the second half of this year if approved for use by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), who will review and analyse the relevant data to see if the vaccine meets their strict standards of safety and effectiveness.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 27/02/2021 15:58

I don’t think it will be available in time for summer. The Moderna and Novovax ones are next.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/02/2021 00:28

They have gone quiet about the Janssen vaccine

Moderna is supposed to start being delivered beginning of March. Some qualities initially. Hopefully that is still happening.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 28/02/2021 00:29

*small quantities initially

I just found this_

(Reuters) - A single-shot vaccine to combat COVID-19 in Britain could be weeks away, with regulators set to begin the approval process this week, The Telegraph reported here

A senior government source said the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) formal process was "very likely" to start this week, according to the report.

The jab, developed by Johnson & Johnson's vaccine division Janssen, was not yet being considered by the MHRA for formal approval, the report added, citing health sources.

"We are working with them to complete the rolling review process, and we look forward to receiving more data from them as soon as possible," a department source told The Telegraph.

I might be able to answer this question on Tuesday. I’m taking part in the Janssen vaccine trial and go back for my second dose of vaccine/placebo then. At previous appointments the people working on it have been keen to keep us updated on progress.

FourCandelabras · 28/02/2021 08:22

@BobsDouble isn’t the Jansen one just one jab?

BobsDouble · 28/02/2021 08:23

In the trial we’re having two doses.

BobsDouble · 28/02/2021 08:24

And 8 weeks apart

FourCandelabras · 28/02/2021 09:44

Really interesting. I wonder if that means it would be a 2 jab in the UK once approved?

TierdOfLockdown · 28/02/2021 14:09

Thank you for your replies, looks like I will probably be offered a different one.

And that would be great if you find out any more info, hope everything goes well with the trial! @bobsdouble

I think Janssen will end up being two doses - it's effective after one, just like AZ and Phizer, but two will be for long term immunity.

The next big vaccine we'll get is Novavax.

Frazzled2207 · 28/02/2021 17:25

@whatswithtodaytoday
I'm taking part in the novavax trial and don't think it's far off
That said Moderna is actually approved we're just waiting for deliveries (starting in march I believe). We 'only' have 17 million of that coming but I suspect it will be the next. The way things are going we will have way more vaccine than we need. Wonder if some of the orders might be turned into 'booster shots' for next winter. Or sent elsewhere.

whatswithtodaytoday · 28/02/2021 21:55

@Frazzled2207 Ooh lucky you! I hope you got the real one.

I don't think we're getting much Moderna at first, are we? We'll have plenty by the summer though.

Frazzled2207 · 28/02/2021 22:01

@whatswithtodaytoday
Thanks! I think I got the placebo but plot twist they’ve now turned it into a crossover trial which means everyone that got the placebo last year gets the real thing by the end of March. And vv.

PuzzledObserver · 28/02/2021 22:52

I think Janssen will end up being two doses - it's effective after one, just like AZ and Phizer, but two will be for long term immunity.

I’ve been wondering this too. How do they decide whether a vaccine needs one or two doses? If Pfizer and Astra Zeneca are good after one dose and better after two, why wouldn’t Janssen be better after two doses.

BobsDouble · 01/03/2021 07:14

I think (but could well have this wrong) that one dose of Janssen works better than one dose of the alternatives so is a good choice for countries and situations wherever it’s difficult enough to organise to give one dose, let alone two (remote parts of Africa, as a crude example). It doesn’t stop people being sick, but it stops them being very sick or dying.

whatswithtodaytoday · 01/03/2021 13:58

@PuzzledObserver I guess they'll do trials and see what the data shows. The Janssen was developed to be one shot so that's what they trialled, but if new trials show two are better they'll switch.

But yes, I imagine in areas where even getting one jab into people is difficult, they'll go with that as it's proven to be effective already.

BobsDouble · 03/03/2021 07:20

I had my second dose yesterday, despite spending hours at the trial centre I didn’t learn anything at all about what is going to happen next with the vaccine, which was a little disappointing. Last time they’d given us all a talk about plans and expectations for the vaccine here and abroad.

Back in two weeks so maybe I’ll learn more then?

sashagabadon · 03/03/2021 07:46

I honestly think it’s arbitrary how they decide between one or two doses. They copy each other ( science involved too I am sure)
I was in the Oxford trial and that was initially one dose then became two in the summer so we all had another dose.
That’s why I don’t worry at all about the 12 week delay. Could be 3 doses next!
