All the plastic!

I’m a teacher and have to do a lateral flow test once a week.

The kids also do one once a week too.

All I can think of when I do it is the bits of single use plastic.. testing kit, test tube, swab etc. And feel sad for our planet.

Is it just me?

I totally agree but I also think that per person, it’s a drop in the ocean of the single use plastic we go through each day. It’s just perhaps more obvious when you see it all together.

So it’s ok to add to an existing problem rather than being the creator of a problem?

It might be if you are only using one mask per day, but then think of all of the medical staff changing items tens of times every day, for example, and multiply that up. The average and therefore the total will be awful.

As I say I totally agree, we need to reduce single use plastic, it’s awful. But the NHS can be very wasteful in single use items anyway. My ex was a paramedic and was only allowed to use scissors once then they got chucked!

Yes it’s awful, but I’m just saying it’s not the only awful thing going on. Hopefully this will be a temporary blip, and you would hope that stuff used by NHS and schools will be disposed of appropriately, and not end up on the ocean in one of the multiple floating plastic islands.
