.....I have to wear a mask outside.

My boss has just called me to say that as of next week we all have to wear masks from the minute we step out of our cars.

The walk to where I am based is about a minute from the car park and even though I will be outside and walking alone I still have to wear a mask.

I remember when we used to joke about this crazy scenario happening.....never believing it actually would.

What next I wonder.

We drove through town at the weekend and were amazed how many people are happy to brush past each other on narrow footpaths without a care in the world.

In some countries masks are compulsory in public spaces - and given how airborne this disease has proved to be, it makes sense to wear them in busy streets.

Not so much in an empty car park, though, I'll give you that!

Exactly - I think the most amount of people I’ve ever seen on my walk from the car park into the building is about 5 and seeing as we are all walking in the same direction anyway there’s no brushing past anyone Grin

Ah well - at least my face will be warm Smile

The world has gone mad and the hystericals definitely seem to be taking over! 🙄

lljkk · 22/02/2021 17:26

what job do you do, OP?

StepOutOfLine · 22/02/2021 17:32

That's good that your employer is taking precautions to keep you safer.

WaterBottle123 · 22/02/2021 17:37

Tell him you want him to wear his pants on his head outside? It makes the same level of scientific sense.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 22/02/2021 17:39

Is it to stop everyone stopping at the door to put them on?

I do this for the Supermarket... Makes more sense to do it in the car rather than holding people up.

SunHoldsTime · 22/02/2021 17:41

We been told now to wear two masks at all times outside here in the US. It's really not a big deal, not sure why the U.K. is so weird and precious about mask wearing.

ThornAmongstRoses · 22/02/2021 17:42

Keep me safer from what exactly? The invisible people walking next to me?

Or if masks are there to protect others.....is my mask actually there to protect the invisible people walking next to me?

I’m an NHS worker and obviously put my mask on as soon as I enter the hospital.

I’m not weird about mask wearing at all - I wear one for 14 hours a day at work, I wear them in shops, I wear them at school pick-up and drop-off etc....I have no problem with mask wearing in general.

In fact I have no problem doing this either, that’s not the point of my post.

My point is how crazy things have gone seeing as it’s acceptable/normal now to be told to wear a mask outside when walking alone.

And there are lots of people in the USA who have taken issue with masks, so the implication the UK is mask averse compared to the USA is daft. Both countries have had their fair share of resistance to them.

RealisticSketch · 22/02/2021 18:10

I know what you mean op. Things that once upon a time would have been a total joke to even suggest have become every day normal. It is weird. I look back on my outlook at this time last year when I was sceptical this would make any more ripples than SARS1 did, certainly no schools closed... Well now, phew, that was quite a ride.

islockdownoveryet · 22/02/2021 18:21

I don’t see how they force you to wear a mask outside I mean do they own outside space ?
So no, if you are walking with lots of people taking etc then I can see why but if it’s just you walking across a empty car park it’s just odd .
A lot of people keep their mask on when outside, I’ve even seen people driving in them but told to actually put it on is baffling.

ragged · 22/02/2021 18:41

How does it work if people walk to OP's workplace -- or cycle to get there. Are they expected to wear masks the whole journey or only once they get into the foot/cycle paths or carpark space?

ThornAmongstRoses · 22/02/2021 18:56

The car park is on the hospital grounds and so they say as it’s Trust Policy then we have to adhere to it.

Well I'm in NYC, and in general most people have had no issues wearing masks at all times outdoors since last April! Now we are being asked to wear two masks and it also seems like it's generally being complied it! Sure the crazies down south and in Florida talk about muzzles etc but in less crazy states like NYC, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine etc, people wear their masks and generally don't complain

I'm going to wear a mask in large gathering eg museums or airports for some time, maybe not forever but I'm not stopping anytime soon. I don't want to get sick.

Why is it a big deal to wear it in a car park on the way into work?

CocoPark · 22/02/2021 19:19

I'd be so annoyed too, OP. It's nothing but a box-tick with no logic sat behind it, I feel sorry for you! Do you need to go along with it, if nobody is actually around?!

It is quite a big deal when you consider how pointless it is and how much unnecessary waste you are producing.

Because it’s an outdoor empty staff car park - not a large indoor gathering like museums and airports.

I’m not quite sure how the example you gave is in any way relevant or similar to mine?

I imagine because it's completely fucking pointless! Unless you honestly and truly believe that lives will be saved because of mask wearing in an empty car park, but surely no one is that daft...?

ThornAmongstRoses · 22/02/2021 19:25

Well apparently, as we are on hospital grounds we are technically at our place of work....that’s how they are justifying their mandatory rule anyway.
