Young adult called for vaccination

My 24 year old son has been contacted by the surgery and is booked. He has asthma, not severe, and is fit and healthy. His 25 year old friend has also got an appt
My area is doing well but I do know 50 odd year olds with various conditions and high BMI who haven't been contacted yet
Any idea why?

Might just be the surgery working the way down their list perhaps? I know of a 34 year old, no health issues apart from mild asthma whose been called - they were a bit confused by it too as no other conditions so didn't expect to be called until the end.

Jackie2022 · 20/02/2021 23:19

You can’t be sure whether his friend has underlying health issues or not, not everyone discloses that info to their friends

I thought asthma was a factor which can make you more vulnerable so it makes sense that your son would be called earlier than others.

I’m also 24, with literally no health issues, and haven’t been contacted, the only people I know that are my age and vaccinated are NHS staff

BloomRoses · 21/02/2021 00:57

Asthma is a health condition though? I know it was only meant to be severe asthma but asthma is still a health condition and maybe some GPs aren't being as strict in stratifying their asthmatic patients?

I'm in my 20s and been invited for a vaccine, I have a congenital heart defect but I look completely fit and healthy as it doesn't affect my life at all (thankfully).

cinammonbuns · 21/02/2021 01:46

DD is 19 and has been offered one as she has a condition so is in group 6. I don’t think there is an order within group 6 so could just be luck of the draw.

YowMyHead · 21/02/2021 01:59

Are the over 50s you mention in your area too?

I’ve not heard of such young people being called, but know 40+s being vaccinated in various parts of London, and unclear why and why others (eg the other spouse, at same GP) is not having vaccine offered

We are v fortunate vs other countries re vaccination in any case

NHSE have sent letters out to whoever has been recorded on their records as either having: high blood pressure , diabetes, asthma, bmi over 39. Where it's all gone wrong is- women may have had gestational diabetes 20 years ago they will be sent a letter. Someone with a high bmi 5 years but may have lost a load of weight in the mean time but haven't had their record updated will be sent a letter and vice versa. The letter also tells them to shield. It's been a nightmare in Gp surgeries with constant calls asking why they've been sent a letter. But whoever has can get the vaccine whether they still have that problem or not.

Borogroves · 21/02/2021 02:25

@unsure111 I didn't think high blood pressure put you in group 6?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 21/02/2021 03:07

DS' girlfriend is 22. She has asthma and she's been called for a jab.

To shield? Both myself and one of my parents have asthma and neither of us have been sent one. Also MIL has high blood pressure also not sent one. There must be some kind of grading of who gets one in those categories?

Is this a recent thing? I have BMI 40+ on my medical records as a current condition but haven’t received a letter.
unsure111 · 21/02/2021 17:52

@lemons yes in the last week or so. It's a awkward conversation when patients call and ask why they've received a letter. It's not my place to tell them if it's because of high BMI so I just run off a list of what the problems class them to be shielding. I think maybe it couldn't be different in certain areas? But I know our CCG have done this

A lot of people didn't receive them the first time round or the second. It literally just goes on what is recorded on your record. You can ring your GP and query this? My parent is diabetic and he hasn't received a letter either. I honestly think it's been a massive blunder
thegcatsmother · 21/02/2021 17:54

My 25 year old ds had his jab on Friday as he has a congenital heart defect.

Well we didn't. Until patients started calling up and we got an email from the CCG and our groups. Hypertension problems is on there.

HelloMissus · 21/02/2021 17:56

My 21 year old has an ap this week.
He has very controlled asthma.
I suspect it’s because his GP practice is majority students so they will have made their way down high priority groups very very quickly.
