Time from jab to side effects? Can he drive?

My DB has his jab booked for Monday. Group 6 diabetic. I’m so bloody grateful.

However, he has to do a 3 hour drive for work (essential) that he can do Monday or Tuesday. I’m inclined to think he should do it immediately after his vaccine but he is thinking of waiting till the next day in case he gets side effects. I think he’s more likely to feel shit the next day. It has to be done (too outing to explain but trust me!)

If you got side effects, how soon after the jab was it? Would you have driven 3 hours afterwards if you’d had to, or the next day?

Thanks!

AZ vaccine. Jab Saturday afternoon, side effects Sunday afternoon.

Wolfiefan · 19/02/2021 17:32

I had the jab lunchtime. Felt fine until sometime overnight. AZ

I had the AZ on Saturday at 9:30am, side effects started around 3pm the same day. They were worst the following day - there is no way that I would have driven on the Sunday as I was far too tired and dizzy. I drove on the Saturday morning, but it was only a 20 minute drive and the biggest problem was not being able to lift my arm properly to change gear.

Had the Pfizer in the morning, aching arm by the time I had to do a night shift. Just kept taking paracetamol through the night.

Three hours later had feelings of nausea. Had to go to bed for the afternoon

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 19/02/2021 17:59

Drove home after AZ and was fine all evening. Felt poorly the next day. OK the day after.
So on my experience, driving the day after would be the worst choice.

Had the AZ jab 08.30 and started getting very tired and the chills 10 hours after (my friend similar, probably after 8 hours). Went to bed early, fairly disrupted sleep as got hot during the night but was fine (if a bit tired) the morning after and could have driven but other people may react differently. I didn't get headaches or nausea, just got very, very thirsty and didn't feel like eating (mainly due to tiredness). Recommend he drinks lots of water before and after!

Pfizer, jab at 11am Sunday,
Aching arm by night time, woke up a few times in the night as was led on arm and was hurting.
Monday morning couldn’t lift arm up past chest and felt really tired. Lasted all day. Felt better by Monday night.

I had AZ on Wednesday morning. I felt fine all day- just a sore arm. On Thursday I felt sick and exhausted - like a hangover. Today ive been absolutely fine.

BettyBoomerang · 19/02/2021 20:31

Thank you so much - this is massively helpful.

It sounds like he'd be best to drive straight after his jab and then it would be done by the afternoon of that day, and maybe earmark the next day for rest as much as possible?

Terrible timing but nevertheless I'm so grateful to hear he's got an appointment at last I actually feel a bit weepy. Been so worried about him.

Yes I had jab Sunday 5 ish then side effects Monday night.

Puffthemagicdragongoestobed · 19/02/2021 23:16

Yes, from my own experience I would also suggest to do the drive as closely as possible to the jab timing.
I had the AZ jab yesterday around mid day, did a half hour drive in the afternoon, and the side effects kicked in at bed time. Spent all day today in bed, even developed a fever very briefly. I would not have wanted to drive today.

makingmiracles · 19/02/2021 23:28

Had az 11am on the Friday, was having 40temp, chills and bone pain from 5/6pm on the Saturday, so around 30hrs later.

Colleague had the same symptoms, jab around the same time as me, symptoms started around 11am on the Saturday.

She’s very slim, I’m a big bird, so wether that made a difference to how quickly our body’s metabolised it needs reacted I don’t know.

I’d be inclined to do the drive on the day he has it and not the day after.

Tagsisbk · 19/02/2021 23:42

The Pfizer gave me a very sore arm which was much worse for the two days after.

I had no other side effects but colleagues who have previously had covid had more side effects (akin to flu symptoms)

BettyBoomerang · 20/02/2021 00:48

I've a sneaking suspicion he's had covid (he's adamant he hasn't but he's a teacher and had the weirdest virus in Feb last year). So he may well get side effects then. I'm going to strongly encourage him to drive straight after.
