Increased heart rate after Oxford AstraZeneca jab

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 18/02/2021 13:35

Hi everyone, I'm a 34 year old mum and had the Oxford AstraZeneca jab yesterday. At 2am my pulse increased to 112 and stayed like that till 11am when it finally started coming down I also had a fever of 38 but it went down with paracetamol. I have no underlying health issues and my partner also had the same heart rate and temperature.
Did anyone else experience this? I called the doctor to ask if it was normal and she said it can happen and will settle throughout the day.
Thankfully it's come down to 88 but by goodness that was so scary.

I don't mean to put anyone off and I'm still happy I had it but I can't read this on the side effects leaflet.

Anyway hope everyone is well and let's get jabbed so we can get back to normality!

@Lovemusic33 don't worry the heart rate will definitely come down. I know it feels horrid while it's happening though right. I went and had an antibody test done today to see if I might have had previous infection already and that could mean I'd only need one dose. Bit late I know I should have done it before but figured if it's positive it can't be from the vaccine as it's only day 2.

@Lovemusic33, I had mine on Wednesday and it seems to have settled. When did yours start? I suppose you're right, it's in our system now. I want to hear from everyone else's second dose experience first before I have it. Not many people have had it.

It’s hard to tell as I have been unwell with something else (Endo flair up), I had a head ache a few hours after the vaccine but the temperature 2 days later, the fast heart rate started the day after the vaccine but the last 2 mornings I have had the panicky feeling and waking with the racing heart. I do feel much better today but not 100%. I haven’t reported my symptoms due to having the endo flair up and not knowing 100% which symptoms were caused by the vaccine. Hopefully I will sleep better tonight and feel better tomorrow.

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 19/02/2021 20:34

@Lovemusic33 ahh okay, I think the initial heart rate the day after was probably the vaccine but now must be something else for you. Obviously temperature is common too. I think you should definitely report it so they can track what happens to people like us after the second dose. It would be good to have more data.

Regardless I'm happy I've had the vaccine. Feel a bit more confident. Hope you feel 100 percent soon. Sounds like you're on the mend xxx

Heart rate tends to go up with a fever so I suppose a lot of people will have this without knowing. They might just feel a bit dizzy/off and not realise it's cos their heart is faster than normal.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 19/02/2021 20:57

Lovemusic33 it’s interesting to hear you say you had an endo flair, yesterday I started having gastric symptoms 24 hours post vaccine

I’m a severe coeliac and have splenic pain, the rest of my guts feel just like they do when I’ve been glutened (I definitely haven’t been) it’s finally starting to improve now after 36 hours

I did check my leaflet and abdominal discomfort is listed as an uncommon 1/100 side effect

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 20/02/2021 01:53

@Tomnooktoldmeto oh no I hope you feel better! Sending love

Thanks Nicolekidmansuperfan I’m a bit better today, still not right but improving.

I never expected to sail through though, I live with a number of conditions so having symptoms to show I was having an immune response is actually great for me

Lattemocha · 24/03/2021 23:02

I am experiencing the same as we speak. Heart rate of 112 and lying in bed. I can actually hear my heart beat+ feverish. Got my vaccine this morning. I hope it settles as I can’t sleep.

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 25/03/2021 14:08

@Lattemocha I’ve heard this happens to so many people. I was alarmed initially but it did settle. How are you feeling now ?

@NicoleKidmansuperfan

Thanks for asking. I'm feeling better although not 100%. I think I've had a bit of all the side effects: chills, fever, headache, loss of appetite, abdominal discomfort, nausea... and of course palpitations that i did not expect :-(... Isn't it like getting a mild Covid infection? Hopefully, i'll sleep better tonight and will be my normal self tomorrow.

RingtheBells · 25/03/2021 20:28

The day after my vaccine my heart rate was up at about 90 all day even though I was resting, had headache, temperature and felt sick, it didn't feel fast I just knew by my Apple Watch, next dat it was not so fast and today it had gradually gone back to normal about 60-70. I haven't noticed any of this but it has recorded on my watch, apparently this happens with infections and flu

Sadsiblingatsea · 25/03/2021 20:34

This sounds quite frightening in a young person.

RingtheBells · 25/03/2021 20:42

A lot of people if it was like mine which was a steady fast heartbeat wouldn't have known if they weren't wearing a smart watch, I only wear mine in the day so no idea about the night time heart rate, so it would be very likely under reported. I had no idea until I looked at heartbeat bit of my watch that evening, I'm 63 so not just young people.

Zainee22 · 29/03/2021 18:13

So relieved to see this comment here. I am 36 and had my first vaccine jab on Saturday, have had a fever since but my pulse went up suddenly to a 114 (used an oximeter as could feel my heart going really fast)!! Stayed the same for a good half an hour or so- hubby panicked and called ambulance as my resting pulse is normally around 65. Such a horrible feeling and thought I was the only one to experience as no one else in my household has had any side effects. I am going to report it too! Hope everyone else is fine now.

MotherOfGodHelpMeOutHereFellas · 29/03/2021 20:46

I wish the system was more proactive about collecting side-effect data instead of relying on people knowing about and logging in to the Yellow Card Scheme. A simple text or automated telephone call could cover it.

CavernousScream · 29/03/2021 21:46

Yes, my Apple Watch showed this for me as well. But that happens when I’m ill, I assume it’s just the immune system working.

XenoBitch · 29/03/2021 21:50

Not me, but a lady on my FB had this happen except her heartrate went so high, she ended up in A&E.

Timeouttime · 05/04/2021 17:49

Can anyone tell me how long their heart rate was high for? I haven't had a fever but I've had palpatations and a high heart rate on and off now for 5 days. Really want it to end can anyone offer me hope?

LovingBob · 05/04/2021 17:53

I had high heart rate for about 5 day s but it was more of a steady higher than usual rather than palpitations. I had a fever and flu like symptoms for about 24 hours which started 12 hours after jab

Timeouttime · 05/04/2021 20:11

Thank you @LovingBob that's good to know. I'm hoping I'll turn a corner soon. My husband pointed out that they got worse after I'd had a cup of tea so I'm going to avoid caffeine for a few days too!

I'm now wondering if these will be worse with the second jab as they were no fun at all and quite scary! (Obviously preferable to Covid/I'm not complaining)

NicoleKidmanSuperFan · 22/05/2021 10:45

Hi everyone. Back on this thread to update on second dose. Just to reassure anyone who had a fast heart rate after the first dose. Well me, my husband and all my friends that had the jab (around 6 of them for AZ) all had normal heart rates after the second. Nothing happened after the second and it was uneventful. Not even a headache.

I think it's fair to give an update here as I really wanted to know before my second dose if those who had fast heart rates with the first had it with the second. So we did not and all is good.

Good luck everyone
