A considerable number of posts - and indeed the media - go on about the wonders of the Australian/NZ strategies and why didn’t we close our borders etc etc.

Now it’s all “£10k fine? Disgraceful!”

It’s all so exhausting . People bay for something, then they get it, then they complain. Unless it’s vital there is no need for international travel atm.

(Frankly I’m delighted they are bringing in strict rules. Dh’s friend, for one, was intending to come here from SA for a vaccine (he pays his dm’s gas bill in UK) but travel via a non-red list country.)

I think the objections relate to whether the penalty is proportionate, rather to whether the introduction of border controls / quarantine is necessary. It is possible to think that the measures are necessary whilst being concerned about the potential prison sentence attached to them.

Delatron · 10/02/2021 08:54

I think also the time to do it would have been at the beginning. As per Australia.

Agree

But the threat needs to be Draconian, otherwise people won’t be too bothered. Best of all would be a swift diversion for 6-months quarantine in the Falkland Islands. That’d do the trick for all those influencers...

I don't want an Australia style approach. The time for that has long passed.

Meredithgrey1 · 10/02/2021 09:14

Well, a lot of the complaints won’t be the same people who were calling for it though.

There's a woman on our local radio station this morning complaining about how she now won't be able to "come home" from New Zealand to visit family because she won't be paying the quarantine fees and it's not fair yada yada yada ......errrr ......wake up and smell the roses love, most of us haven't seen family at the other end of the country let alone the other side of the world! The sense of entitlement of some people really is baffling at times.
I'm sure a year ago everyone was calling for the borders to be closed and we now we make steps to do it they're in uproar about that. Yes, it's about a year too late but surely anything that helps to control the spread of variants of the virus is a good thing?

Prefer this to be honest

I dunno what the poor inhabitants of the falkland islands have done to deserve it though

Can you imagine....all those selfie’s with penguins 🐧

Posters who want a good froth are focussing on the maximum possible sentence for repeat offenders.

I think the possibility of a custodial sentence is appropriate, and penalties for repeat offending should be severe

Chloemol · 10/02/2021 10:06

Totally agree with you

And no £10k is not disproportionate. People seem to forget that the point is to stop the virus. If someone comes in, especially from somewhere like SA, refuse to quarantine, and spreads the virus people may die, not to mention the extra stress on the nhs possibly, all because they decided it wasn’t for them

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 10/02/2021 10:08

I agree too.

And l wish all international travel was closed except freight like Scotland has done. Boris one step behind as usual...
