likeamillpond · 10/02/2021 08:22

Is this the original Kent mutant or a mutant of the mutant?
And how worried should we be?
It comes up in my newsfeed but the main news doesnt seem to be carrying it.
Downplaying it or fake news?
I'm thoroughly confused Confused

See last night's thread on exactly this.

All I saw was that they detected a handful of cases but don't know any more about it, yet.

SonnetForSpring · 10/02/2021 08:35

It's the Kent variant but with another change to the spike protein (same change as presents in the South African and Brazilian variants). Therefore, the vaccines may be less effective in dealing with it. We don't know how much less effective. However, if the virus keeps mutating at this speed because we are not suppressing it enough, then herd immunity through vaccination becomes unfeasible. So we have to do both- suppress the virus as much as possible (hence the surge testing/border controls/lockdown) and vaccinate while boosting regularly to include new variants.

Another day, another variant, another lockdown

New mutant in Liverpool and Bristol

Is this a new X-Men film?

bathsh3ba · 10/02/2021 08:51

It's been classified a 'variant of concern' and in Bristol at least there is extra testing going on. I live in an adjacent county. Cases still falling in Bristol at moment.

likeamillpond · 10/02/2021 09:04

I wondered why the surge testing was taking place in certain areas.
I thought it was to stop the SA variant. But now there s yet another variant.

Its not a mutant variant, it's a mutation of the Kent strain but since this is what viruses do to survive it's hardly a mutant (which suggests going against nature when infact the virus is doing exactly as nature intended).
