8 million deaths in twelve months

FelicityMingington · 09/02/2021 10:20

Will we be demanding the immediate shut down of the economy until a solution is implemented, calling people granny murderers, and piously putting human life above all else?

I can guarantee not!

It’s 8 million deaths and not 80 million deaths BECAUSE we shut down, ffs

pinkgin85 · 09/02/2021 10:29

A whole year later and people still don't understand that the point of lockdown is to prevent the health services from being overwhelmed which they would definitely have been and collapsed if we kept going as normal.

The award for not reading the OP goes to...
DappledOliveGroves · 09/02/2021 10:29

Good post, OP. Why the obsession about Covid deaths, above all else, I have never understood. Even if 800 million died of Covid the world would keep turning.

If you are on about covid deaths it is not 8 million worldwide either...
Inastatus · 09/02/2021 10:35

@LucilleTheVampireBat - I think cantmakealife and pinkgin will have to share the award 😂

Flyonawalk · 09/02/2021 10:43

Very good post OP. We all need to be aware of enormous death tolls, all the time, from causes other than Covid.

Quartz2208 · 09/02/2021 10:46

Because I think it has never been about deaths to be fair its about the infrastructure the sheer numbers of people being ill at the same time and the impact that would have on the NHS

Pinkgin doesnt need the award she is right - this has never been about deaths.

Because utlimately as we solve one things that causes death another will step into the void, it will always happen continously because the only certainty in life is death

FlyNow · 09/02/2021 10:48

Climate change will go on to claim literally billions of human lives, so I totally agree OP.

The world population daily increase is truly terrifying. I happened upon a site once with a live calculator of births and deaths.. It's going up hundreds of thousands every few days. Can't remember exactly how much. A lot more worrying than deaths from Covid. IMHO.

PattyPan · 09/02/2021 11:22

I think we do need to take strong action on pollution and support ClientEarth who have repeatedly sued the government over our air quality.
I also think we needed lockdowns to tackle coronavirus. These views are not mutually exclusive.

Here it is. I am sure it is not entirely accurate, but it is a bit of fun.....

Given that the world population is increasing NOT because of increased birth rates, but because people are living longer, what do you suggest - euthanising everyone on their 60th birthday?

Or maybe some sort of global pandemic that mainly kills older people? Wink

Delatron · 09/02/2021 11:30

Only deaths from Covid matter though...

Good point, I stand corrected!

Anti-natalist on a website about having children?

Or only some countries allowed to breed?

Breeding isn't the problem. Living is...

I thought anti-natalism was when you believe humanity should voluntarily go extinct, because the overwhelming suffering in life is not worth it and if you're never born you won't miss on any good bits anyway.

Hi Pinkgin,

Cards on the table - I don't understand this point. What is the problem with the NHS being overwhelmed (other than the resulting deaths).

This comment doesn't make sense, given that it's not us having lots of children. Isn't the UK birth rate actually less than replacement rate?

Of course the reasons behind this are to do with global inequality and subsequent infant mortality, so I'm not pointing the finger at those in other countries.

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 09/02/2021 14:41

@FelicityMingington

I'm guessing the problem is that there would be civil unrest/legal challenges if patients were refused treatment.

Also, literally, what would happen to the dying/injured/dead bodies?

I don't think it takes much imagination to realise that overwhelming the NHS is not an option anyone would want to see.
