Strange taste in my mouth all the time

I'm not sure if this falls under 'loss or change in sense of taste and smell' as things taste and smell normal. But I have a weird, sour taste in my mouth all the time. Brushing and flossing teeth makes no difference. I'm a bit snotty as I have a light cold. Worth getting a test?

Yes book a test. It's the only way you'll know. Lots of people with Covid start with a cold.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/02/2021 11:43

I've had that on and off for months. I've had a couple of covid tests, both negative and it's not my teeth. I think in my case it's because I've got acid reflux as it seems to be worse when I've eaten something I shouldn't.

Fingers crossed you're negative

PammieDooveOrangeJoof · 07/02/2021 11:45

Yes I had that when I had covid. Definitely test.

ExpulsoCorona · 07/02/2021 11:45

Acid reflux can definitely cause this, yes. How long have you had the cold symptoms?

LindaEllen · 07/02/2021 11:58

Absolutely! DP and I both had cold symptoms. Any change of taste should be tested.

JaninaDuszejko · 07/02/2021 12:00

Could you be pregnant? My first symptom each time I was pregnant was a metallic taste in my mouth.

zaffa · 07/02/2021 12:02

Yes that is absolutely one of my earliest symptoms and the only thing that made me vaguely suspicious. Everything tasted weird and a little chemically for me. I wondered if I was pregnant as I always had a strange taste in my mouth then too, but because I had a sore throat and chills (but no fever) I didn't really think about covid until I was offered a test through the Zoe App. And within two days of testing I was suddenly very unwell; even though I'd had the sore throat for a week already. The NHs list of symptoms just isn't in depth enough.

LeaveMyDamnJam · 07/02/2021 12:03

It could well be post nasal drip.

zaffa · 07/02/2021 12:04

Also I never lost my sense of smell but stuff did end up smelling weird - like we got new shampoo for my daughter and I thought it absolutely reeked but now I can see it really doesn't. (Almost heightened smell - all adding to pregnancy theory 😂). The day I had the test I noticed that my coffee tasted disgusting and I ate some chocolate that just tasted like chemicals and that's the first time I really thought it could be covid and somehow was altering my sense of taste ....

Bluewavescrashing · 07/02/2021 12:12

Cold started yesterday. I do have acid reflux, yes.

Get a test

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/02/2021 13:01

BTW I wasn't saying don't get a test!

knittingaddict · 07/02/2021 14:13

Could well be acid reflux, but combined with cold symptoms I would check. I have quite severe acid reflux and the constant weird taste is horrible, although I'm used to it by now.

pastacaring · 07/02/2021 19:00

Get a test, I've got Covid, started with weird taste, not loss of taste or smell.

Bourbanbiscuit · 07/02/2021 19:09

I had an awful taste in my mouth when I had covid so definitely get tested. I've not heard of many people having that as a sympton.

Bluewavescrashing · 07/02/2021 19:11

I went for a test. This afternoon. Thanks for replies

Negative test. Weird taste is still there!

knittingaddict · 08/02/2021 12:31

It could be your acid reflux. Are you taking any medication for it? Can you talk to your doctor about it?

Cattitudes · 08/02/2021 12:36

Have you been to the dentist lately? Could it be the start of an abscess?

Gooseygoosey12345 · 08/02/2021 12:39

Is thrush a possibility? Any white coating on the tongue?

zaffa · 09/02/2021 19:20

@pastacaring @Bourbanbiscuit out of curiosity how severe was your covid and your recovery - given that we have all three had the less usual symptom of a weird taste rather than a loss of taste? Mine was suddenly quite bad (not hospital bad, but I was worried I'd have to go at one point as oxygen sats were reading at 92 but nurse said no) but I felt dreadful. Unable to get out of bed dreadful really. And then I was fine. Recovery is pretty ok, occasionally still have awful taste and a little breathless carrying DD about (she is 14 months though) and generally tired but I can't really blame covid for that ..... don't think I have any long covid symptoms. How about you both?

pastacaring · 09/02/2021 20:31

I'm on day 8 in bed. My main symptom now is dizziness but really tired too. It's been horrible to be honest. I did lose my smell and taste fully a few days ago with no signs of it returning yet.

Bourbanbiscuit · 09/02/2021 21:31

I had the headache, ached all over. I had a crackling in my chest so I was worried but thankfully never developed the terrible cough. I was very tired and breathless for a while but now feel fine. I would say I had it very mildly and am very lucky. I hope you all make a good recovery very soon xx

zaffa · 10/02/2021 10:08

@pastacaring I hope you start to feel better soon. The doctor I spoke to (I had suspected pneumonia and had antibiotics) said that it really helps recovery to do lots of steaming multiple times a day, with a bowl of water and a towel over uour head. Horrible though especially when you can barely get out of bed but it did help in the end. I highly recommend using the online service where you can get a call back - they always called very promptly and I was referred to a doctor on the second call and she had the antibiotics at the pharmacy for me within the hour. All over the phone - i would have probably been more reassured had I seen someone face to face but with COVID that would probably mean I would have to be very sick indeed and in hospital (understandably!) but It was very efficient and they were very reassuring. All the best wishes for a speedy recovery x
@Bourbanbiscuit glad to hear you're feeling better!
